Association between blood transfusion and early mortality in patient undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Blood transfusions are frequently administered to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients. However, the relationship between blood transfusion and outcomes in ECMO patients remains unclear. This study investigated the association between blood transfusion and 90-day mortality in ECMO patients.

Prognostic impact of 1-year permanent pacemaker implantation after mitral valve surgery with the Cox-maze procedure.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation within the first year after mitral valve (MV) surgery combined with the Cox-maze procedure, focusing on long-term outcomes, including overall mortality, infective endocarditis (IE) and ischaemic stroke.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) in South Korea, identifying 10 127 patients who underwent MV surgery with the Cox-maze procedure between 2005 and 2020. Patients were classified into the PPM and non-PPM groups based on PPM implantation within 1 year postoperatively.

However, its effectiveness in OHCA remains controversial despite advancements in resuscitation techniques. This retrospective single-center study compared neurological outcomes and 30-day survival between ECPR and CCPR patients from January 2014 to January 2022.

Arterial Complications Assessed by Duplex Ultrasound After Decannulation of Peripheral Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

Background: Vascular complications are common and can be fatal even after successful decannulation in patients with peripherally cannulated veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). Therefore, we aimed to accurately determine the incidence of arterial complications assessed by Duplex ultrasound following peripheral VA-ECMO decannulation. In addition, we investigated the predictors of severe complications requiring intervention.

Aims: Unplanned intensive care unit (ICU) readmissions contribute to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The severity of patient illness at ICU discharge may predict early ICU readmission. Thus, in this study, we investigated the association of cardiac ICU (CICU) discharge Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score with unplanned CICU readmission in patients admitted to the CICU.

Long-term clinical outcomes for patients with uncrossable patent foramen ovale.

Introduction: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure is performed in selected patients with cryptogenic stroke to prevent recurrence. The prognosis of patients with uncrossable PFO after failed guidewire or catheter passage during the procedure remains unknown. We compared the long-term prognosis between uncrossable PFO and successful PFO closure in patients with high-grade PFO shunts.

Safety and Efficacy of Post-Dilation in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Using Polymer-Free Ultrathin Strut Sirolimus-Probucol Coated Drug-Eluting Stents.

: Polymer-free ultrathin strut sirolimus- and probucol-eluting stents (PF-SES) are recognized as safe and effective in diverse patient populations, although the implications of post-dilation during stent implantation remain underexamined. : In this study, patients implanted with PF-SES at Gachon University Gil Medical Center between December 2014 and February 2018 were evaluated. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), encompassing nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI), nonfatal stroke, and cardiovascular death were identified as primary outcomes, with secondary outcomes including target vessel revascularization (TVR), target lesion revascularization (TLR), and in-stent restenosis (ISR).
