Purpose: Obesity is becoming a global health problem that leads to serious complications. Despite numerous efforts to lose weight, achieving this goal is very difficult. Polyethylene glycol-coated ceria-zirconia nanoparticles (PEG-CZNPs) have attracted significant attention for their antioxidant properties, but they also have another valuable ability: restoring autophagy flux.

Electrochemical Aerobic Oxidation and Cyclization of 2-Alkylbenzamides toward 3-Hydroxyisoindolinones.

In this study, we present an electrochemical method for forming C(sp)-N and C(sp)-O bonds from 2-alkylbenzamides, leading to the synthesis of 3-hydroxyisoindolinones. This reaction demonstrates broad substrate compatibility and can efficiently transform 2-alkylbenzamides with primary and secondary C(sp)-H bonds by using -BuNBr under open-air conditions. The proposed methodology provides a straightforward, efficient, and atom-economical route to access diverse 3-hydroxyisoindolinones (28 examples, up to 82% yield).

Management of Elderly Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent among elderly patients, and as the global population ages, the number of elderly patients with CKD is increasing. Elderly patients require additional considerations beyond those required for their younger counterparts, such as comorbidities, frailty, and geriatric syndromes. In this review, we primarily focus on these additional considerations specific to elderly patients and discuss the assessment of CKD and its management strategies, including blood pressure and glycemic control; dyslipidemia, anemia, and electrolyte and metabolic acidosis management; and medication dosage, among others, as well as polypharmacy and nonpharmacological management.

Rise in Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnoses: A Comparative Analysis of Pre-pandemic and Pandemic Periods.

Introduction  This study analyzes the rise in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses by comparing pre-pandemic (2017-2019) and pandemic period (2021-2023) data from two private pediatric practices with different populations in New York. The year 2020 was out of the analysis to focus on the impact after the shutdowns on ASD, and there were disruptions in clinic operations during that year. Clinic I primarily served an African-American ethnic population, while Clinic II primarily served an Asian population.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is known to be a critical stimulant for inducing the proliferation of glioma cancer cells. In our study, we observed that GST-RhoA binds to pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) in vitro. While EGF reduced the levels of RhoA protein, it significantly increased p-Y42 RhoA, as well as PKM1 and PKM2 in LN18 glioma cell line.

Near-infrared focused heating method for the rotational diamond anvil cell.

We developed a near-infrared focused heating system (IRrDAC) for deformation experiments using a rotational diamond anvil cell. This study reports the results of annealing tests on silver and antigorite conducted at SPring-8 (BL47XU) using the IRrDAC system. The experimental results demonstrated the melting of silver and the dehydration of antigorite, confirming the capability of this system.

Plasma presepsin for mortality prediction in patients with sepsis-associated acute kidney injury requiring continuous kidney replacement therapy.

Background: The reliability of presepsin as a biomarker of sepsis may be reduced in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT). This study analyzed the utility of plasma presepsin values in predicting mortality in patients with AKI requiring CKRT, particularly those with sepsis-associated AKI.

Methods: This single-center retrospective study included 57 patients who underwent CKRT, with plasma presepsin measurements, from April 2022 to March 2023; 35 had sepsis-associated AKI.

Usefulness of the heart rate variability test in predicting intradialytic hypotension in patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis.

Background: Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is the primary complication of haemodialysis (HD); however, its diverse pathophysiology and inconsistent definitions complicate its prediction. Despite attempts using the heart rate variability (HRV) test for IDH prediction, studies on its usefulness for predicting IDH diagnosed per the nadir 90 criterion are lacking. We aimed to evaluate HRV test efficacy and reproducibility in predicting IDH based on the nadir 90 criterion.

Importance of dialysis specialists in early mortality in elderly hemodialysis patients: a multicenter retrospective cohort study.

The early mortality rate in elderly patients undergoing hemodialysis is more than twice that in young patients, requiring more specialized healthcare. We investigated whether the number of professional dialysis specialists affected early mortality in elderly patients undergoing hemodialysis. This multicenter retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 1860 patients aged ≥ 70 years who started hemodialysis between January 2010 and December 2017.

Elevated cholesterol in ATAD3 mutants is a compensatory mechanism that leads to membrane cholesterol aggregation.

Aberrant cholesterol metabolism causes neurological disease and neurodegeneration, and mitochondria have been linked to perturbed cholesterol homeostasis via the study of pathological mutations in the ATAD3 gene cluster. However, whether the cholesterol changes were compensatory or contributory to the disorder was unclear, and the effects on cell membranes and the wider cell were also unknown. Using patient-derived cells, we show that cholesterol perturbation is a conserved feature of pathological ATAD3 variants that is accompanied by an expanded lysosome population containing membrane whorls characteristic of lysosomal storage diseases.

Herein, we report direct electrochemical C(sp)-H lactonization of 2-alkylbenzoic acids toward phthalides. The reaction provides a wide substrate scope of 2-alkylbenzoic acids bearing primary to tertiary C(sp)-H bonds by utilizing a graphite anode, dichloromethane (DCM) solvent, hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) cosolvent, and -BuNClO electrolyte. Our synthetic approach offers a simple, intuitive, and atom-economical protocol to synthesize various phthalides (25 examples, up to 92% yield) and obtain other 5- and 6-membered lactones (10 examples, up to 83% yield).

We investigated whether HLA class II eplet mismatch was related to dnDSA development and analyzed its combined impact with tacrolimus levels for kidney transplantation outcomes. Visible-Light-Induced Organophotocatalytic Difunctionallization: Open-Air Hydroxysulfurization of Aryl Alkenes with Aryl Thiols.

Herein, we report a regioselective visible-light-induced organophotoredox catalytic difunctionalization method to prepare β-hydroxysulfides using aryl alkenes and aryl thiols as substrates. The reaction provides a wide substrate scope of aryl alkenes (from simple styrene to complex bioactive compounds) and aryl thiols (from diverse heteroaromatic thiols to nonheteroaromatic thiols) (total 45 examples, up to 88% yield). Based on the combined experimental and computational studies, we demonstrate that generated hydroperoxyl radicals from O in air react with benzylic radicals, which restrains the reaction between benzylic radicals and the acidic form of thiols in a classical thiol-ene radical reaction.
