Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) in distinguishing various macular diseases without using indocyanine green angiography (ICGA).
  • It involves a review of 63 eyes from patients with treatment-naive neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and finds that SS-OCTA accurately identifies conditions like nonpolypoidal macular neovascularization (MNV) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) with high sensitivity and specificity.
  • The results suggest that SS-OCTA can be a viable alternative to ICGA for diagnosing these macular diseases, offering a reliable method for ophthalmologists to make decisions.

  • A 54-year-old woman was diagnosed with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) after experiencing two weeks of double vision without any headaches.
  • Examining her eye movements revealed deficits, and both her fundoscopic exam and brain imaging indicated problems in specific brain veins due to thrombosis.
  • The case highlights the need to consider CVST as a potential diagnosis when patients display symptoms like bilateral optic disc swelling and double vision, regardless of having headaches.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined if directly measured small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (D-sdLDL-C) can better predict long-term coronary artery disease (CAD) events compared to traditional cholesterol measures like LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and apolipoprotein B in patients with stable CAD.
  • Over 1,000 patients were monitored for 12 years, with findings indicating that patients with D-sdLDL-C levels of 32.1 mg/dL or higher faced a significantly increased risk for CAD events, unlike those with estimated levels (E-sdLDL-C).
  • The results suggest that D-sdLDL-C is a stronger independent risk factor for future CAD events, making it a

Aims/introduction: Small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) is a more potent atherogenic lipoprotein than LDL. As sdLDL-cholesterol (C) levels are determined by triglyceride and LDL-C levels, pemafibrate and statins can reduce sdLDL-C levels. However, it remains unclear whether adding pemafibrate or increasing statin doses would more effectively reduce sdLDL-C levels in patients receiving statin therapy.

Aims: Small dense (sd) low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (C) is the most powerful predictor of cardiovascular (CV) disease among lipid biomarkers and is generated by hypertriglyceridemia and insulin resistance. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a newly proposed liver disease with a high CV risk. We investigated the specific association of sdLDL-C with MAFLD beyond triglycerides (TG) and obesityMethods: Participants were 839 non-alcoholic drinkers with type 2 diabetes enrolled in a regional diabetes cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • Intraocular hemorrhage (bleeding inside the eye) can impact vision and may be linked to antithrombotic medications (like antiplatelets and anticoagulants), but research on this risk, particularly with combination therapies, is limited.
  • The study analyzed data from a large pharmacovigilance database to assess the occurrence of intraocular hemorrhage with various antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies, finding specific drugs (like aspirin and warfarin) associated with these risks.
  • Notable findings include signals for intraocular hemorrhage in younger patients on aspirin monotherapy and in elderly patients on both monotherapy and combination therapy with warfarin, with a median

The Pemafibrate to Reduce Cardiovascular Outcomes by Reducing Triglycerides in Patients with Diabetes (PROMINENT) trial failed to show the preventive effects of pemafibrate, a triglyceride (TG)-lowering drug, on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. We recently reported that TG-lowering with pemafibrate did not decrease the calculated small dense (sd) low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and speculated that the effect of TG on sdLDL-C is attenuated in low LDL-C levels. This report examined this possibility in 1,508 patients with type 2 diabetes and 670 healthy controls.
