Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has become a powerful sequencing tool, applied in a wide range of biological studies. However, the traditional sample preparation protocol for NGS is non-strand-specific (NSS), leading to biased estimates of expression for transcripts overlapped at the antisense strand. Strand-specific (SS) protocols have recently been developed.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is highly heritable and associated with dysregulation of brain glucose utilizations (GU). The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) 10398A polymorphism, as a reported BD risk factor, leads to deficient glycolytic energy production by affecting mitochondrial matrix pH and intracellular calcium levels. However, whether mtDNA-10398A has functional effects on the brain and how our body responds remain elusive.

Background/purpose: Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) and toxin-encoding Clostridium difficile (TXCD) are associated with gastroenteritis. Routine anaerobic blood culture for recovery of these anaerobic pathogens is not used for the detection of their toxins, especially for toxin-variant TXCD. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of the genotypes of these anaerobes in patients with acute diarrheal illnesses.

Article Synopsis
  • Intragastric infections of Klebsiella pneumoniae in mice lead to serious liver issues, including abscesses and necrosis, alongside widespread bacterial infection (bacteremia).
  • Lithium chloride (LiCl), known for its anti-inflammatory effects and commonly used for bipolar disorder, significantly protects infected mice from death and liver damage when administered after infection.
  • LiCl appears to enhance the immune response by making K. pneumoniae more vulnerable to macrophage attacks without directly inhibiting bacterial growth, suggesting it could be a potential treatment for liver infections caused by this pathogen.

Objectives: Previous studies have found that attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in childhood and adolescence is associated with an increased risk of major depression and bipolar disorder in later life. However, the effect of ADHD comorbidity on the diagnostic conversion to bipolar disorder among patients with major depression is still uncertain.

Methods: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 58,023 subjects < 30 years of age who had major depression with (n = 1,193) or without (n = 56,830) ADHD comorbidity between the years 2000 and 2008 were enrolled in our study.

Heparan sulfate (HS) is a linear sulfated polysaccharide that mediates protein activities at the cell-extracellular interface. Its interactions with proteins depend on the complex patterns of sulfonations and sugar residues. Previously, we synthesized all 48 potential disaccharides found in HS and used them for affinity screening and X-ray structural analysis with fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF1).

Background: Cancer is the result of a multistep process of genomic alterations, including mutations in key regulatory proteins that result in loss of balanced gene expression and subsequent malignant transformation. Throughout the various stages of colorectal carcinoma (CRC), complex genetic alterations occur, of which over-expression of growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, fibroblast growth factor and platelet-derive growth factor and their corresponding receptor tyrosine kinases, have been shown to correlate with invasiveness, tumor angiogenesis, metastasis, recurrence, and poor prognosis of colorectal cancer. To evaluate the therapeutic effect, we combined Dovitinib, an orally bioavailable, potent inhibitor of class III-V receptor tyrosine kinases with chemotherapeutic drug, oxaliplatin in preclinical models of colon cancer.
