Background: Paradoxically, patients with T4N0M0 (stage II, no lymph node metastasis) colon cancer have a worse prognosis than those with T2N1-2M0 (stage III). However, no previous report has addressed this issue.

Aim: To screen prognostic risk factors for T4N0M0 colon cancer and construct a prognostic nomogram model for these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines skip lymph-node metastasis (SLNM) in gastric cancer (GC), a rare form of metastasis, and its impact on patient outcomes compared to more typical lymph-node metastasis patterns.
  • Of 505 GC patients with lymph-node metastasis, 4.8% showed SLNM, which significantly influenced overall survival in those categorized as pN1, indicating that SLNM could be a critical factor in assessing prognosis.
  • The research suggests that larger tumor size may predict SLNM occurrence, highlighting the need for further investigation into SLNM and its clinical implications for improving patient management in GC.

The coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi is covered with elaborated calcite plates, the so-called coccoliths, which are produced inside the cells. We investigated the incorporation of zinc into the coccoliths of E. huxleyi by applying different zinc and calcium amounts via the culture media and subsequently analyzing the zinc content in the cells and the Zn/Ca ratio of the coccoliths.

The genome of the japonica subspecies of rice, an important cereal and model monocot, was sequenced and assembled by whole-genome shotgun sequencing. The assembled sequence covers 93% of the 420-megabase genome. Gene predictions on the assembled sequence suggest that the genome contains 32,000 to 50,000 genes.
