Meropenem/vaborbactam is a combination antibiotic with a carbapenem and a carbapenemase inhibitor typically reserved for extensively drug-resistant bacterial infections, such as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). Meropenem/vaborbactam is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for use in adults for complicated urinary tract infections, whereas data in the pediatric population are limited. This case series described the use of meropenem/vaborbactam in 2 pediatric patients, ages 11 and 15, with intraabdominal abscesses from CRE.

Natural Killer (NK) cells play pivotal immunological roles including direct cytotoxic effector function and secretion of inflammatory and immunomodulating cytokines. In the context of chronic inflammation, NK cell fitness decreases during disease progression through currently unknown mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that Interleukin-35 (IL-35) inhibits human NK cell proliferation, pro-inflammatory, and cytotoxic functions, while promoting secretion of TGF-β and proangiogenic factors in vitro.

Introduction: Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) is primarily expressed in human dendritic and B cells and recognizes double-stranded DNA motifs from pathogens to initiate an inflammatory response. Recent studies have revealed TLR9s' involvement beyond its conventional role in the immune response, notably during the tumorigenesis of various cancers such as head and neck, cervical, and ovarian cancers.

Dysregulated innate immune responses contribute to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), characterized by gastrointestinal, mucocutaneous, and/or cardiovascular injury occurring weeks after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) exposure. To investigate innate immune functions, we stimulated ex vivo peripheral blood cells from MIS-C patients with agonists of Toll-like receptors (TLR), key innate immune response initiators. With the increasing dependence on fluorescence bioimaging, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have gained significant attention due to their excellent photostabilization, minimal photobleaching, high reliability, and superior biocompatibility. Since mitochondria are crucial subcellular organelles in eukaryotic cells with important biological functions, organelle-specific AIE emitters with distinct functions have been highly sought after, but with limited success using simple synthetic methods. There is increasing evidence that viral infections are the source/origin of various types of encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, and other neurological and cognitive disorders.
