Cerebral white matter injuries, such as periventricular leukomalacia, are major contributors to neurodevelopmental impairments in preterm infants. Despite the clinical significance of these conditions, human-relevant models for studying fetal brain development and injury mechanisms remain limited. This study introduces a human iPSC-derived myelination model developed using a microfluidic device.

Given Japan's unique social background, it is critical to understand the current risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) to effectively manage the condition, especially among specific groups. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the current risk factors for PPH during planned cesarean section (CS) in Japan. This multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted in two tertiary maternal-fetal medicine units in Fukushima, Japan and included 1,069 women who underwent planned CS between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to explore how weight gain during pregnancy affects the development of hypertensive disorders in women who were already obese before getting pregnant, specifically focusing on those with a BMI of 25 kg/m or higher.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 3,000 first-time mothers in Japan, examining different pre-pregnancy BMI categories and how gestational weight gain influenced the risk of conditions like gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia.
  • Findings indicated that gaining more weight during pregnancy correlated with increased risks for hypertensive disorders, highlighting the need for personalized weight recommendations for pregnant women with pre-pregnancy obesity.

Background: Dystocia is a common obstetric complication among nulliparous women, which requires medical intervention and carries the risk of negative maternal and neonatal outcomes. Our aim was to examine the association between body mass index (BMI) and the occurrence of dystocia. We also identified cutoffs of gestational weight gain, based on pre-pregnancy BMI, associated with the risk of dystocia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how weight gain during pregnancy affects the risk of hypertension disorders (HDP) in women with a pre-pregnancy BMI of 30.0 kg/m² or higher.
  • It included 257 Japanese women who experienced singleton pregnancies, analyzing data from 2013 to 2020, and found a higher prevalence of hypertension in first-time mothers compared to those with previous pregnancies.
  • The results suggested that limiting weight gain to under 3.85 kg might help reduce the risk of hypertension disorders during pregnancy, which can be useful for personalized health advice for obese women planning to conceive.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study reviewed cases of PGHA treatment to evaluate management strategies and determine key clinical indicators that guide treatment decisions.
  • * Findings revealed that higher shock index and lower platelet and fibrinogen levels were linked to arterial embolization treatment, suggesting that specific clinical markers can aid in choosing the appropriate management approach for PGHA.

Introduction: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) in pregnant women is rare and resembles surgical site infection (SSI). Here we present two cases of PG after caesarean section.

Case 1: A 29-year-old woman, who had a history of recurrent wound dehiscence after surgery, exhibited wound ulceration and exudate 6 days after caesarean section.

Objective: Histological chorioamnionitis (CAM) is related to neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, identifying intrauterine inflammation before delivery is challenging. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in fetal heart rate (FHR) short-term variability (STV) during the course of histological CAM.

Histological chorioamnionitis (CAM) is one form of intrauterine inflammation that is often seen in cases of preterm birth and are usually confirmed based on pathological examination after delivery. Histological CAM is related to significant neonatal morbidity and mortality; however, its etiology is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the risk factors for histological CAM, using medical background, including fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns in preterm birth cases.

We describe an extremely rare case of advanced pure primary ovarian squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), treated by adjuvant chemotherapy with dose-dense paclitaxel combined with carboplatin (dd-TC) plus the combination chemotherapy with irinotecan and cisplatin (CPT-P), with long-term recurrence-free survival. A 71-year-old woman complaining of lower abdominal pain was referred to our hospital and a 7-cm-diameter solid tumor was identified. She was diagnosed with a left ovarian tumor that was highly suspicious for malignancy based on ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography.
