: Prior studies suggest that patients' body composition changes following transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) implantation, potentially influencing complications and survival. : A prototype artificial intelligence (AI)-based, automated computed tomography (CT) body composition analysis tool was used to assess body composition imaging parameters in pre- and postinterventional scans of TIPS patients: visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) areas, psoas muscle area (PMA), and total abdominal muscle area (TAMA). Sarcopenia was defined as a lumbar skeletal muscle index (LSMI) ≤ 38.

Background & Aims: The Freiburg index of post-TIPS survival (FIPS) defines a high-risk group of patients with significantly reduced survival following transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) implantation. However, the clinical hallmarks responsible for these patients' unfavorable outcome remain to be identified. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize the clinical course after TIPS implantation according to the FIPS.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the link between skeletal muscle quality, specifically intramuscular adipose tissue and skeletal muscle density, and survival outcomes in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) receiving transarterial chemoembolization (TACE).
  • - In a review of 784 HCC patients, those with higher albumin-skeletal muscle density scores (ADS) had better overall survival rates, particularly in viral-induced HCC cases, compared to those with lower ADS.
  • - The findings suggest that low ADS is a significant predictor of poorer survival in patients with viral-induced HCC, while muscle quality parameters do not impact survival in cases of alcohol-induced or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis-induced HCC.

This retrospective study was aimed at characterizing vascular malformations (VMFs) presenting for minimally invasive image-guided therapies (MIT) at a tertiary-care center and evaluating treatment regimens and image-based outcomes using MRI. We analyzed demographic, disease-related, and radiologic features of VMFs presenting to interventional radiology between May 2008 and August 2020 using compendium vascular anomaly (Compva) criteria. MIT and specific agents were evaluated, and treatment effects were assessed through volumetry and mean signal intensity (MSI) on multiparametric longitudinal MRI.

Article Synopsis
  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCC) is an aggressive tumor often diagnosed late, prompting this study to evaluate body composition analysis (BCA) from CT scans for predicting surgical complications.
  • The research involved 86 patients and found that sarcopenia (muscle loss) and higher levels of subcutaneous and visceral fat increased the risk of complications, leading to longer hospital and ICU stays.
  • The study concluded that BCA is more effective than BMI for assessing risks before surgery in iCC patients, suggesting its incorporation into routine preoperative evaluations.

Article Synopsis
  • Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat portal hypertension, and this study examines its dysfunction and mortality rates over time.
  • Out of 834 patients monitored from 1993 to 2018, 1-, 2-, and 5-year mortality rates were approximately 20.9%, 22.5%, and 25%, with dysfunction rates at 28.4%, 38.9%, and 52.4% for the same periods.
  • The study found that using covered stents lowers the risk of TIPS dysfunction, while factors like emergency TIPS procedures, prior dysfunction, and higher Freiburg scores are linked

cHCC-CCA is an uncommon type of liver cancer that exhibits clinical and pathological characteristics of both hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), which are the two main forms of primary liver cancer. The similarity to HCC and CCA makes therapeutical strategies challenging. The poor prognosis of CCA in general, as well as for cHCC-CCA, is mainly attributable to the fact that diagnosis is often at an advanced stage of disease.
