Background/aim: Cancer development involves complex interactions between immune mechanisms and the tumor microenvironment, with regulatory T cells (Tregs) being implicated in suppressing anti-tumor immunity. The X-linked gene Forkhead Box P3 (), which regulates Tregs' function, and its promoter variant rs3761548 C>A have been widely studied for their role in tumorigenesis. This meta-analysis aims to re-evaluate the association between rs3761548 and cancer risk using two statistical approaches to account for sex-based genotypic differences and X-chromosome statistical challenges.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by the overactivity of the parathyroid glands. While a few genes have been linked to a predisposition for PHPT, the genetic foundation of the disease remains unclear, despite it being the third most prevalent endocrine disorder. This pilot study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the potential association between specific variants in Annexin A2 (-rs7170178, rs17191344, rs11633032), Mediator Complex Subunit 12 (-rs1057519912), Calmodulin 1 (-rs12885713), and Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase 1 (-rs1057519911) genes with PHPT.

: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the most commonly performed operation in general surgery in the Western World. Gallbladder surgery, although most of the time simple, always offers the possibility of unpleasant surprises. Despite progress, the incidence of common bile duct injury is 0.

Background: The protective impact of the Critical View of Safety (CVS) approach on the vasculo-biliary injuries during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) depends largely upon the understanding of the normal and variant anatomy. Structures exposed during the acquisition of the CVS can deviate from the typical dual configuration of the cystic duct and artery (gallbladder pedicle) representing either a third (supernumerary) or atypical in course (heterotopic) element. The aim of this study was to determine the identity and the frequency of these anatomical elements and to propose anatomic schemata that can guide the achievement of CVS by surgeons.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assesses the outcomes of adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma in obese versus nonobese patients, using data from 46 centers from 2012 to 2022.
  • It finds that while obesity does not significantly increase the rate of complications or comprehensive complication index (CCI), it does lead to a longer hospital stay for patients.
  • Furthermore, minimally invasive surgical techniques, like laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, are associated with less morbidity in obese patients, and a retroperitoneal approach may provide additional benefits.

Mesh-augmented hernia repair is the gold standard in abdominal wall and hiatal/diaphragmatic hernia management and ranks among the most common procedures performed by general surgeons. However, it is associated with a series of drawbacks, including recurrence, mesh infection, and adhesion formation. To address these weaknesses, numerous biomaterials have been investigated for mesh coating.

Purpose: Thyroidectomy is the treatment of choice for malignant thyroid diseases as well as for benign conditions who cannot be treated medically. The most common complication following thyroidectomy is hypocalcaemia and hypoparathyroidism that usually results from accidental damage or removal of one or more parathyroid glands. Parathyroid gland autotransplantation has been one of the most common intraoperative strategies applied to tackle this problem.

: Parathyroid adenoma is a distinct cause of primary hyperparathyroidism, with the vast majority being sporadic ones. Proteomic analysis of parathyroid adenomas has proposed a large number of related proteins. The aim of this study is to evaluate the immunohistochemical staining of ANXA2, MED12, MAPK1 and VDR in parathyroid adenoma tissue.

Article Synopsis
  • Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common thyroid cancer, with a notably higher incidence in females, potentially linked to X chromosome inheritance.
  • The study examined two X-linked genes, Forkhead Box P3 (FOXP3) and Protein Phosphatase 1 Regulatory Subunit 3F (PPP1R3F), in relation to PTC risk and gender differences by analyzing genetic data from 136 PTC patients and 136 healthy controls.
  • Results showed that specific genetic variants (rs3761548) are more likely to predispose females to PTC, and differences in methylation status of FOXP3 were found in PTC patients compared to controls, suggesting a mechanism for increased risk in

Introduction: Surgical studies evaluating a device or technology in comparison to an established surgical technique should accurately report all the important components of the surgical technique in order to reduce the risk of intervention bias. In the debate of visualization of the recurrent laryngeal nerve alone (VONA) versus intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) during thyroidectomy, surgical technique plays a key role in both strategies. Our aim was to investigate whether the surgical technique was considered as a risk of intervention bias by relevant meta-analyses and reviews and if steps of surgical intervention were described in their included studies.

Background: Since its outbreak in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has diverted resources from non-urgent and elective procedures, leading to diagnosis and treatment delays, with an increased number of neoplasms at advanced stages worldwide. The aims of this study were to quantify the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic; and to evaluate whether delays in surgery led to an increased occurrence of aggressive tumours.

Methods: In this retrospective, international, cross-sectional study, centres were invited to participate in June 22, 2022; each centre joining the study was asked to provide data from medical records on all surgical thyroidectomies consecutively performed from Jan 1, 2019, to Dec 31, 2021.
