Dengue fever, identified by the World Health Organization as a significant global health threat, is the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne viral disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Annually, 100-400 million cases are reported, with over 14 million cases and 10,000 deaths in 2024 alone, highlighting the public health challenge of dengue, especially in tropical and subtropical urban areas. The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is a critical factor in dengue transmission, creating favorable conditions for Aedes mosquitoes.

Repurposing FDA approved drugs with off-target autophagy inhibition such as chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine (CQ, HCQ) has produced modest anticancer activity in clinical trials, due in part, to a failure to define predictive biomarkers that enable the selection of patients that best respond to this treatment strategy. We identified a new role for REDD1 as a determinant of sensitivity to autophagy inhibition in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). RNA sequencing, qRT-PCR, immunoblotting, gene silencing, knockout and overexpression studies revealed that REDD1 expression is a key regulator of cell death stimulated by autophagy inhibitors.

A phylogenetic analysis incorporating mitochondrial cox1 gene sequences of members of the family Caesionidae revealed the conspecificity of Pterocaesio flavifasciata and Squamosicaesio marri, which was also supported by the absence of any clear morphological diagnostic characters and meristic counts to separate the two species. Additionally, we provide the first record of the Suez fusilier, Flavicaesio suevica, from outside the Red Sea, based on specimens collected from the Laccadive archipelago, Western Indian Ocean. Together, these results show that the taxonomy, diversity, and distribution of members of the family Caesionidae continue to be poorly known, necessitating a comprehensive range-wide study.

Epigenetic gene silencing induced by expanded repeats can cause diverse phenotypes ranging from severe growth defects in plants to genetic diseases such as Friedreich's ataxia in humans.
