Many North American game animals experienced severe population declines during the 19th century due to market hunting. However, estimates of the timing and magnitude of these declines often rely on anecdotal evidence, which makes it difficult to understand the lasting impacts of hunting pressures versus climate or landscape changes on the genetic diversity of contemporary populations. Historical reports suggest the California quail (Callipepla californica) suffered more significant hunting pressure in the late 19th century relative to either Gambel's (Callipepla gambelii) or mountain quail (Oreortyx pictus).

Background: The impact of home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on changes in exercise frequency and capacity according to sex and age has not been studied.

Methods And Results: This cohort study included 118 patients participating in HBCR and 149 patients participating in center-based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR) for whom data on exercise and peak oxygen uptake (V̇O) were available at program enrollment and completion. Microglia are the tissue resident macrophages of the brain and their contribution to tau pathology progression remains to be fully understood. In this study, we developed a quantitative platform to elucidate the processing of extracellular tau within human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived microglia. We show that iPSC-derived microglia internalize monomeric and fibrillar tau through different cellular mechanisms and with different clearance kinetics.

Background: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a widely underutilized secondary cardiovascular disease prevention strategy, due to a variety of barriers to participation that disproportionately impact women, minoritized racial and ethnic groups, and patients with low socioeconomic status. , a virtual world-based CR (VWCR) program designed by our team in collaboration with patients and community members to mitigate the barriers to CR participation, has demonstrated feasibility and acceptability. In anticipation of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to further validate the intervention, this qualitative descriptive analysis provides insights garnered from a patient/community/stakeholder-advisory board (PCS-AB, HEALERS) focus group series, convened to inform iterative refinements to a RCT protocol.

Birds are renowned for their diverse and colorful plumage. Here, we demonstrate that vibrant plumage in the tanager genus is substantially intensified by a "hidden" layer of achromatic (white or black) plumage concealed beneath the outermost colorful layer. Using hyperspectral imaging, multispectral photography, microspectrophotometry, reflectance spectrophotometry, and optical modeling, we show that hidden white and black feather layers are systematically distributed on the body to enhance the brightness and saturation of carotenoid-pigmented and structurally colored plumage, respectively, by increasing or decreasing the amount of backscattered light that interacts with pigments or nanostructures.

Nanohybrids of graphene and colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs/Gr) provide a promising quantum sensing scheme for photodetection. Despite exciting progress made in QDs/Gr photodetectors in broadband from ultraviolet to short-wave infrared, the device performance is limited in middle-wave infrared (MWIR) detection. Colloidal quantum dots/graphene (QD/Gr) nanohybrids have been studied intensively for photodetection in a broadband spectrum including ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared (UV-vis-NIR-SWIR). Since the optoelectronic process in the QD/Gr nanohybrid relies on the photogenerated charge carrier transfer from QDs to graphene, understanding the role of the QD-QD and QD-Gr interfaces is imperative to the QD/Gr nanohybrid photodetection. Near-future climate change projections predict an increase in sea surface temperature that is expected to have significant and rapid effects on marine ectotherms, potentially affecting a number of critical life processes. Some habitats also undergo more thermal variability than others, and the inhabitants therefore must be more tolerant to acute periods of extreme temperatures. Mitigation of these outcomes may occur through acclimation, plasticity or adaptation, although the rate and extent of a species' ability to adjust to warmer temperatures is largely unknown, specifically as it pertains to effects on various performance metrics in fishes that inhabit multiple habitats throughout ontogenetic stages.

The ability of feathers to perform many functions either simultaneously or at different times throughout the year or life of a bird is integral to the evolutionary history of birds. Many studies focus on single functions of feathers, but any given feather performs many functions over its lifetime. These functions necessarily interact with each other throughout the evolution and development of birds, so our knowledge of avian evolution is incomplete without understanding the multifunctionality of feathers, and how different functions may act synergistically or antagonistically during natural selection.

Background: Sixty-four state, local, and territorial health departments (HDs) in the United States report monthly performance metrics on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case investigation and contact tracing (CI/CT) activities. We describe national CI/CT efforts from 25 October 2020 through 24 December 2021, which included 3 peaks in COVID-19 case reporting.

Methods: Standardized CI/CT data elements submitted by the 64 HDs were summarized as monthly performance metrics for each HD and the nation.
