Background: Advances in new drugs have been associated with improvements in the prognoses of individuals with stage IV renal carcinoma. We aimed to retrospectively evaluate the prognostic improvement of stage IV renal cancer over time using the Okayama Cancer Registry database, which is included in the National Cancer Registry (NCR) of Japan.

Methods: Patients identified in the database with stage IV renal cancer were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how well the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) predicts outcomes for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) receiving first-line immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy.
  • Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of 119 patients from 19 institutions, comparing those with GNRI scores above and below 98, which was identified as a critical cutoff point.
  • Results indicated that while higher GNRI scores correlated with better overall and cancer-specific survival rates, the Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score was a stronger predictor of patient prognosis than the GNRI.

Purpose: The usefulness of the urine loss ratio in the early postoperative period for prognosis of long-term urinary continence after radical prostatectomy has not been fully determined.

Materials And Methods: All patients who underwent radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer at our institution between November 2015 and March 2021 were retrospectively included. We investigated the rate of continence achievement 1 year after surgery, as well as the associated risk factors for reduced continence achievement, classified by every 10% of the urine loss ratio.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline mutations in the folliculin gene (FLCN). It is characterized by skin tumors, multiple lung cysts, and renal tumors. Active genetic testing and appropriate periodic examinations of family lines of patients with BHD syndrome have not been widely performed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), focusing on mRNA expression and genetic variants in kidney tissues from 125 Japanese patients.
  • Researchers identified significant downregulation of UGT subtypes (UGT1A6, UGT1A9, UGT2B7) in RCC tissues and noted correlations between specific UGT variants and patient survival outcomes.
  • The UGT2B7-161C > T variant and UGT2B7 mRNA expression emerged as independent prognostic factors, suggesting UGT2B7 could serve as a potential biomarker for RCC progression and prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • No previous studies have directly compared the adverse events (AEs) of the combination therapies axitinib + pembrolizumab and lenvatinib + pembrolizumab for metastatic renal cell carcinoma using real-world data from the FDA's adverse event database.
  • The research analyzed 28,937 records and found that certain serious AEs, such as cardiac and hepatobiliary disorders, were more prevalent with axitinib + pembrolizumab, while lenvatinib + pembrolizumab had higher rates of blood and lymphatic system issues, metabolism, and vascular disorders.
  • This study is significant as it reveals the real-world differences in AEs between the two combination therapies and suggests that patient conditions linked to these

The aim of this ongoing trial is to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of sitafloxacin (STFX) 200 mg once daily (QD) for 7 days in patients with refractory genitourinary tract infections, which include recurrent or complicated cystitis, complicated pyelonephritis, bacterial prostatitis, and epididymitis. The primary endpoint is the microbiological efficacy at 5-9 days after the last administration of STFX. Recruitment began in February 2021, and the target total sample size is 92 participants.

Objectives: To examine anti-adhesion and anti-biofilm effects of a diamond-like carbon coating deposited via a novel technique on the inner surface of a thin silicon tube.

Methods: Diamond-like carbon coatings were deposited into the lumen of a silicon tube with inner diameters of 2 mm. The surface of the diamond-like carbon was evaluated using physicochemical methods.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed a minimal increase in tacrolimus levels (0.3 ng/mL) in the CYP3A5∗3/∗3 group, with no significant changes in other CYP3A5 and CYP2C19 genotypes.
  • * The study suggests that using vonoprazan alongside tacrolimus is safe, as it does not significantly alter tacrolimus trough levels in the studied groups.

We report a 62-year-old male with metastatic fumarate hydratase-deficient renal cell carcinoma (FH-deficient RCC) without fumarate hydratase (FH) mutation (FH-deficient-like RCC). The International Metastatic RCC Database Consortium risk score was intermediate, and immunotherapy with nivolumab and ipilimumab (Ipi/ Nivo) was initiated. Four cycles of Ipi/Nivo and 5 cycles of nivolumab resulted in a complete response of the metastases.

Objectives: To compare the donor outcomes of living donor kidney transplantation between standard donors (SDs) and marginal donors (MDs) including diabetic patients (MD + DM).

Methods: MDs were defined according to Japanese guideline criteria: (a) age >70-years, (b) blood pressure ≤130/80 mmHg on hypertension medicine, (c) body mass index >25 to ≤32 kg/m , (d) 24-h creatinine clearance ≥70 to <80 ml/min/1.73 m , and (e) hemoglobin A1c > 6.

Background/aim: This study aimed to elucidate the detailed characteristics of CYP3A5 expression and the association between CYP3A5 expression and clinical outcomes in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Patients And Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled 124 Japanese patients with RCC treated at the Okayama University Hospital. The commonest CYP3A5 gene polymorphism, CYP3A5*3, and expression levels of CYP3A5 mRNA and protein in each tissue were examined.

Background: We investigated the association between ABO-incompatible (ABO-I) kidney transplantation and early graft function.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 95 patients who underwent living donor kidney transplantation between May 2009 and July 2019. It included 61 ABO-compatible (ABO-C) and 34 ABO-I transplantations.

Case Presentation: A 49-year-old Asian male, who had undergone hemodialysis for >16 years, complained of a fever, dysgeusia and dysosmia, and was diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia based on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction (SARS-CoV-2 PCR) and computed tomography (CT). Treatment was started with oral favipiravir and ciclesonide inhalation. On the 10th day of treatment, the patient had a persistent high fever and a chest CT showed exacerbation of pneumonia, so dexamethasone was intravenously started.

Background: The advantages of photodynamic diagnostic technology using 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA-PDD) have been established. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to evaluate the usefulness of ALA-PDD to diagnose upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UT-UC) using the Olympus VISERA ELITE video system.

Methods: We carried out a prospective, interventional, non-randomized, non-contrast and open label cohort pilot study that involved patients who underwent ureterorenoscopy (URS) to detect UT-UC.
