Purpose: There are no methods for assessing the need for multimodal care in cancer cachexia. We examined nine components in evaluating needs among advanced cancer patients.

Methods: This was a self-administered survey.

Objectives: Inflammatory status may influence the response to nutritional support. We aimed to determine associations between calorie intake and survival considering serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels among advanced cancer patients.

Methods: Data on characteristics and CRP levels were obtained at baseline.

Purpose: To compare the clinical utility of G-banding and next-generation sequencing (NGS) for chromosomal analysis of products of conception (POC), a crucial tool for detecting fetal chromosomal abnormalities which are major causes of miscarriage and stillbirth.

Methods: We evaluated the clinical utility of both techniques in a prospective analysis of 40 patients who experienced miscarriages or stillbirths between 6 and 36 weeks of gestation under Advanced Medical Care A in Japan. Both methods were applied to the same POC samples.

Objectives: This multicentre, retrospective study aimed to evaluate differences in drug continuation rates and efficacy between first- and second-line use of biological DMARDs (bDMARDs) and Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) after failure of the initial therapy in real-world RA settings.

Methods: Data from an observational multicentre registry of patients with RA in Japan were analysed, encompassing 5900 treatment courses (4046 bDMARD/JAKi-naïve cases and 1854 second-line cases). Gray's tests were used to compare the cumulative incidence function (CIF) for drug discontinuation, considering discontinuation due to remission as a competing risk.

Approximately 2%-12% of individuals aged > 65 years worldwide are estimated to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), with a mortality rate exceeding 60% in rupture cases. The sole preventive intervention against rupture is timely surgery, which requires substantial medical resources, including postoperative complication management. Although numerous randomized clinical trials have been performed, no oral medication effectively treats AAA.

Background: Sex-related differences in eating-related distress (ERD) experienced by cancer patients have not previously been clarified.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter survey among advanced cancer patients referred to palliative care. Data on patient characteristics were collected from the electronic medical records, and data on measurement outcomes were obtained from a questionnaire.

Heart disease is a major global threat. Triglyceride deposit cardiomyovasculopathy (TGCV) is an emerging, noncommunicable, adult-onset heart disease, first identified in Japanese patients with heart failure (HF) requiring cardiac transplantation. In TGCV, defective intracellular lipolysis of long-chain triglycerides (TGs) results in cellular steatosis and energy failure mainly in cardiomyocytes and smooth muscle cells, leading to HF, diffuse coronary artery disease with TG deposition and ventricular arrhythmias with high mortality.

Few studies investigated the clinical implications of C-reactive protein-albumin ratio (CAR) in palliative care. To determine the association of CAR with overall survival among terminally ill patients with cance. Datasets were obtained through two multicenter prospective cohort studies.

Triglyceride deposit cardiomyovasculopathy (TGCV) is a rare cardiovascular disorder caused by defective intracellular lipolysis of triglyceride, resulting in heart failure and diffuse narrowing atherosclerosis. Recently, the registry of TGCV patients in Japan revealed that the 3-year overall survival rate was 80.1% and the 5-year overall survival rate was 71.

Background: Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are correlated with patient outcomes in cancer. This study aimed to determine associations between the CRP level and the dietary intake, symptoms, and eating-related distress (ERD).

Methods: We conducted a multicenter survey among advanced cancer patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Advanced cancer patients often experience nutrition impact symptoms (NISs) and depressive moods, which this study aimed to explore.
  • The study analyzed 225 palliative care patients, dividing them into non-depression and depression groups based on their scores from the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9).
  • Results showed a significant relationship where depression was linked to a higher number and severity of NISs, indicating that having four or more severe NISs is associated with an increased risk of depression.

Background: Centralization of cancer care increases survival but increases the travel burden (i.e., travel durations, distances, and expenditures) in visiting hospitals.

Background & Aims: The international cancer cachexia criteria with a cutoff of 5% weight loss (WL) was proposed in Western patients. The Asian Working Group for Cachexia (AWGC) developed new criteria in Asian patients. The AWGC criteria are not cancer-specific and employ a cutoff of 2% WL.

Background & Aims: There is no definition of nutrition impact symptoms (NISs) in cancer care. Moreover, there is a lack of evidence on the associations of NISs with dietary intake and eating-related distress (ERD) in advanced cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the associations of NISs with dietary intake and ERD in patients with advanced cancer.

Objectives: It is unknown to what extent the fluid retention (FR) status disrupts the detection of weight loss rate (WLR) in adult patients with advanced cancer. This study aimed to determine the association of FR status with WLR.

Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate if low serum creatinine levels in advanced cancer patients are linked to worse outcomes.
  • It analyzed data from 1,617 patients divided by serum creatinine levels, finding that higher levels correlated with shorter survival rates for both males and females.
  • Ultimately, the findings suggested that low serum creatinine levels do not predict poor prognosis in these patients.

Tetracyclines exhibit anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities via various mechanisms. The present study investigated the efficacy and safety of demeclocycline in patients hospitalized with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 via an open-label, multicenter, parallel-group, randomized controlled phase 2 trial. Primary and secondary outcomes included changes from baseline (day 1, before the study treatment) in lymphocytes, cytokines, and SARS-CoV-2 RNA on day 8.

Background: We previously reported that dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with cilostazol was superior to aspirin or clopidogrel for the prevention of recurrent stroke and vascular events in a subgroup analysis of intracranial arterial stenosis in the Cilostazol Stroke Prevention Study for Antiplatelet Combination (CSPS.com), a randomized controlled trial.

Aims: We conducted another subgroup analysis to investigate the benefit of DAPT with cilostazol in patients with extracranial arterial stenosis (ECAS) and those without arterial stenosis.

Objective: Human cardiac () shows autosomal-dominant inheritance in catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia type 1 (CPVT1); however, variants have been observed in sporadic cases. Here, we investigated CPVT1-related variant inheritance and its clinical significance between familial and cases.

Methods: We enrolled 82 independent CPVT1 probands (median age: 10.
