Article Synopsis
  • Cognitive impairment (CI) is common in patients with chronic pain (CP), increasing the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, yet there’s limited knowledge on diagnostic models for CP-related CI.
  • Researchers conducted a study at West China Hospital to correlate complete blood count parameters with CP-related CI, using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to categorize patients.
  • The study included 163 patients and identified critical factors influencing CP-related CI, ultimately developing a diagnostic model with a good predictive ability, indicated by an AUC of 0.803, which supports early detection of CI in chronic pain patients.

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) frequently occur after thyroidectomy. Previous studies have investigated the effects of preoperative dexamethasone for alleviating PONV in various cancers, but studies focused on papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) were limited. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a single preoperative dose of dexamethasone to prevent PONV in patients with PTC.

Objective: To compare the efficiency and accuracy of electroencephalographic nonlinear index (ENI) and bispectral index (BIS) in monitoring depth of anesthesia during general anesthesia.

Methods: Thirty patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery were recruited. The ability of ENI and BIS to distinguish between the anesthetic states (awake, loss of eyelash reflex, loss of response, steady anesthesia, first reaction and extubation) was analyzed with prediction probability (Pk).
