Alkali burns are known to possess high pathological potential because of their inherent ability to lyse cell membranes and penetrate intraocular structures with devastating results. The authors aimed to evaluate the most common cause of this presentation, the current treatment approaches to injury, and eventual outcome as related to severity. The authors performed a retrospective review of all patients who sustained chemical-related ocular injuries seen at the Concord Hospital Burns Unit, Australia between January 2005 and March 2012.

Complete mitochondrial genome organization of Tor putitora.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Tor putitora, an endemic coldwater fish of Himalayas was determined for the first time. The genome is 16,576 bp in length and consists of 13 protein coding genes, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNA genes and 1 putative control region. The gene organization and its order were similar to other vertebrates.

An alternate protocol for establishment of primary caprine fetal myoblast cell culture: an in vitro model for muscle growth study.

Cultured myoblasts have been used extensively as an in vitro model in understanding the underlying mechanisms of myogenesis. Various protocols for establishing a pure myoblast culture have been reported which involve the use of special procedures like flow cytometry and density gradient centrifugation. In goat, only a few protocols for establishing a myogenic cell culture are available and these protocols use adult muscle tissues which often does not yield sufficient numbers of precursor cells with adequate proliferative capacity.

Thermal injuries caused by medical instruments: a case report of burns caused by a pulse oximeter.

Pulse oximeters have been widely used since the 1980s as they are considered to provide a safe, convenient, noninvasive method of estimating blood oxygen saturation. Initially used in the operating room by anesthesiologists, pulse oximetry has become ubiquitous in the healthcare setting. Although rare, serious burn injuries secondary to pulse oximetry have been reported.

Secondary carina Y-stent placement for post-lung-transplant bronchial stenosis.

Background: Post-lung-transplant bronchial stenosis (TBS) may cause significant morbidity and mortality. Although often transiently relieved by balloon bronchoplasty, stents may be required for long-term airway patency. We report a series of lung transplant patients in whom a silicone Y-stent was placed at the secondary carina for long-standing relief of post-transplant-airway stenosis.

Incomplete Kawasaki disease followed by systemic onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis- the diagnostic dilemma.

The authors report an 18-mo-old girl who presented with features of incomplete Kawasaki disease and was refractory to intravenous immunoglobulin and infliximab treatment. She subsequently responded to pulse intravenous methylprednisolone therapy. The diagnostic dilemma arose after 2 mo when she developed clinical features suggestive of systemic onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Novel synchronization technique for two parallel connected sparkgap switches.

In this article a novel way of synchronizing two parallel connected sparkgap switches with accuracies of 1-5 ns for high frequency pulsed power applications is described. The circuit design of a synchronized sparkgap switch circuit is discussed. The circuit uses a combination of one master sparkgap and a set of inductor and capacitors to synchronize two sparkgaps and can be controlled via an IGBT switch.

Interferon stimulated gene 15 (ISG15), one of the several proteins induced by conceptus derived Type I and/or a Type II interferon (IFN), is implicated as an important factor in determining the uterine receptivity and conceptus development. However, presence as well as specific role of the ISG15 in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) reproduction is yet to be elucidated. In the present study, both genomic and cDNA sequences of bubaline (bu) ISG15 were cloned and investigated for its expression in different tissues of female reproductive tract of buffalo.

Association of thrombomodulin gene polymorphisms and plasma thrombomodulin levels with acute myocardial infarction in north Indian patients.

Background: Rheumatic fever and chronic rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains one of the most important causes of cardiovascular morbidity leading to a major public health problem, especially in developing countries. This was a pilot study to assess the presence of inflammation and expression of adhesion molecules by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in endomyocardial biopsy specimens of patients with chronic RHD.

Thrombocytopenia as a presenting feature of Kawasaki disease: a case series from North India.
