Transitioning to a bioeconomy that makes use of low-emission and waste feedstocks requires greater flexibility to accommodate seasonal variations and mitigate long-term storage challenges, such as material loss and fire risk. To achieve this goal, biomass deconstruction technologies must efficiently handle diverse feedstocks. Here, we assess the cost of using butylaminea distillable solventto deconstruct 22 different biomass feedstocks: 7 herbaceous, 9 woody, 4 food processing residues, and 2 blends.

Biomarkers such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurofilament light (NfL), and MRI-based hippocampal atrophy are potential indicators of neurodegeneration, but their long-term predictive value remains unclear.ObjectiveThis study examined 20-year longitudinal associations between CSF NfL, MRI-based hippocampal atrophy, and cognitive decline in cognitively normal older adults.

Objective: Hearing loss is a potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia, yet questions remain about its impact on cognitive trajectories. Hearing aid use has been proposed as a protective intervention, but findings are mixed. This study examined longitudinal associations between hearing loss, hearing aid use, and cognitive function, and explored the role of environmental noise exposure.

Older adults often use anti-seizure medications (ASMs), which can negatively impact cognitive function, mood, and behavior, mimicking AD or its symptoms. Understanding the effects of ASMs across diverse older adults is crucial, given that some ethnoracial groups are at higher risk for AD or more severe symptoms compared to non-Hispanic Whites.

SAE is technically of two types - proximal (P-SAE) and distal (D-SAE). There is limited data regarding the role of SAE in liver transplant recipients.

Background: The aging population in the USA is projected to increase significantly, with a corresponding rise in dementia cases, particularly among racial minorities. This study examines the key drivers of racial disparities in dementia risk among older Black adults in the St. Louis area, a region characterized by entrenched structural racism.

Background: Studies investigating the associations of self-reported aspirin use and mammographic breast density (MBD) have reported conflicting results. Therefore, we investigated the associations of aspirin metabolites with MBD in premenopausal women.
Methods: We performed this study on 705 premenopausal women who had a fasting blood draw for metabolomic profiling.
Lipids accumulated in the vegetative tissues of cellulosic feedstocks can be a potential raw material for biodiesel and bioethanol production. In this work, bagasse of genetically engineered sorghum was subjected to liquid hot-water pretreatment at 170, 180, and 190 °C for different reaction time. Under the optimal pretreatment condition (170 °C, 20 min), the residue was enriched in glucan (57.

Biodiesel is a green, renewable alternative to petroleum-derived diesel. However, using vegetable oil for biodiesel production significantly challenges the food security. Progress in metabolic engineering, understanding of lipid biosynthesis and storage have enabled engineering of vegetative tissues of plants such as sugarcane, sorghum, and tobacco for lipid production.

In this work, the effect of particle size on alkali pretreatment of the almond shell was evaluated for recovery of hemicellulose. Further, endoxylanase from Thermomyces lanuginosus was immobilized on Fe-based magnetic nanoparticles to enable reuse of enzyme. Reduction in particle size significantly influences the recovery of hemicellulose as particle size below 120 μm enable recovery of 97% available hemicellulose in 1 h at 121 °C with 2 M alkali.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAlmond shell, a by-product obtained from the nut industry, was valorised into low degree of polymerisation xylooligosaccharides using alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. The effect of particle size on hemicellulose recovery upon pretreatment was studied using 1 and 2 M NaOH. It was observed that particle size significantly influences hemicellulose recovery, as particles below 120 µm resulted in near complete recovery at 2 M NaOH.
