Introduction: Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are biomarkers used to diagnose, monitor, differentiate, and treat various systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs). The gold standard test for SARD screening involves using human epithelial cells (HEp-2) in an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIFA) to detect ANA. However, diagnosing autoimmune disorders can be challenging when patients test ANA-negative but exhibit specific autoantibody patterns targeting the cytoplasm or mitotic spindle apparatus in the IIFA.

Article Synopsis
  • Phytophthora infestans is a serious pathogen causing late blight disease in potatoes, impacting them throughout their growth stages and spreading quickly.
  • Field experiments in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 winter seasons tested the effectiveness of novel fungicides, showing that certain treatments resulted in the lowest disease incidence and highest tuber yields.
  • The study found that late blight is positively correlated with temperature, humidity, and sunlight, and the use of specific fungicides significantly reduced disease severity and increased profitability compared to untreated controls.

The present study assessed the diet characteristics, trophic guild structure, and microplastics (MPs) ingestion by a group of fish sourced from the tidal creeks of the Mumbai coast along the Eastern Arabian Sea. The diet patterns were characterized using gastro-somatic index (GaSI), relative length of gut (RGL), diet overlap (α), diet breadth (B), and relative abundance of food items (%IOP), with a special emphasis on MPs contamination. The findings revealed that teleost and shrimps are the most preferred food items for these species.

Grass carp intestinal waste-mediated biosynthesized nanosilver (AgNPs) was valorized using guaran and zeolite matrices, resulting in AgNPs-guaran, AgNPs-zeolite, and AgNPs-guaran -zeolite composites. The valorized products were examined using Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray Diffraction analysis to confirm uniform dispersion and entrapment of AgNPs within the matrixes. These valorized products were evaluated for their efficacy in detoxifying the ubiquitous and toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr) in aquatic environments, with Anabas testudineus exposed to 2 mg l of Cr for 60 days.

Triclosan (TCS), an antibacterial biocide, pervades water and sediment matrices globally, posing a threat to aquatic life. In densely populated cities like Mumbai, rivers and coastal bodies demand baseline TCS data for ecotoxicological assessment due to the excessive use of personal care products comprising TCS. This pioneering study compares spatiotemporal TCS variations and risks in freshwater and marine ecosystems employing multivariate analysis of physicochemical parameters.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores using poultry intestines to create stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and assess their effects on fish physiology.
  • The toxicity tests on the fish species Anabas testudineus indicated a lethal concentration (LC) value of 25.46 mg/l, with subsequent exposure to lower concentrations over 60 days revealing dose-dependent stress responses.
  • Findings show silver accumulates in various organs but not in muscle tissue, suggesting the fish can detoxify over time, and specific lower concentrations of AgNPs may not induce significant stress, highlighting potential applications in aquaculture.

This study investigated the diet composition and microplastic contamination in six fish species collected from the creek area of northeastern Arabian Sea. The results show that the diet of the fish is mainly composed of shrimps, algae, fish, and zooplankton, with microplastics constituting up to 4.83 % (Index of Preponderance) of their diet.

The acute toxicity of mercury to the air-breathing fish Clarias batrachus (Linn.) was determined in this study using hematological (including hemoglobin, hematocrit, total erythrocyte count, total leukocyte count, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) and biochemical (including total serum protein, serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, albumin) biomarkers at predetermined exposure concentrations (0.069 and 0.

To examine the spectrum of selenium toxicity between hardy and less hardy species of the same life stages, short-term and longer-term exposures in juvenile air-breathing fish Channa punctata (Bloch, 1973) and non-air-breathing fish Ctenopharyngodon idella (Cuvier, 1844) were assessed. Acute exposures revealed a greater 96-h median lethal concentration (LC) for C. punctata (14.

The hydrophilic nature and resultant persistence of neonicotinoids in aquatic systems increase the exposure duration for non-target organisms. The sublethal toxicity of the neonicotinoid Thiamethoxam® spanning sub-chronic and chronic durations was investigated in Clarias batrachus, a non-target freshwater fish species. 96 h LC value of Thiamethoxam® on Clarias batrachus was 138.

The sub-lethal toxicity of Captan® on selected haematological (Hemoglobin, Haematocrit, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin) growth (Condition factor, Hepatosomatic Index, Specific Growth Rate), biochemical (serum glucose, protein), and endocrine parameters (growth hormone, T and T) in Clarias batrachus was examined under chronic exposures. Captan® was administered at predetermined exposure concentrations (0.53 and 1.

There is limited information on fluoride toxicity and risk overview on ecotoxicological risks to aquatic invertebrate populations particularly molluscan taxa. This necessitated the assessment of toxicity responses in the freshwater snail, Bellamya bengalensis exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of sodium fluoride. Under lethal exposures (150, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 450 mg/l), the median lethal concentrations (LC) were determined to be 422.

The widespread occurrence of Mercury (Hg) and its derivatives in the aquatic environment and risks to the health of local populations has necessitated investigations into its toxic effects on sessile species. The toxicity of Mercury was observed sequentially from 96 h acute exposure regime (behavioural endpoints) to chronic durations (haematological and biochemical toxicity endpoints) in Bellamya bengalensis. Time-dependent lethal endpoints for acute toxicity (LC50) of mercury i.
