Human visual processing is limited-we can only track a few moving objects at a time and store a few items in visual working memory (WM). A shared mechanism that may underlie these performance limits is how the visual system parses a scene into representational units. In the present study, we explored whether multiple-object tracking (MOT) and WM rely on a common item-based indexing mechanism.

Embodied cognition theory assumes that MNL is activated by postural bias and in turn affects cognitive processes; for example, research shows that quantitative estimates are smaller when participants' bodies are leaning to the left than to the right. In this study, we tested whether distance estimation in the natural environment is influenced by head rotation.

To this end, we designed an apparatus which solves the majority of problems that fMRI researchers may encounter during testing. The display apparatus - here: delivering objects for manual exploration and grasping (hence the "Grasparatus") - is equipped with semi-attachable stimulus belts and, therefore, allows for presentation of numerous 3D objects in a pre-ordered sequence.

Whereas in the visual domain there is clear evidence for left lateralization of the networks underlying the guidance of actions involving tools, comparable evidence in haptic modality is missing. Therefore, we examined whether the temporo-parieto-frontal networks responsive to interactions with tools also support haptically guided functional grasping.
