Background: For orthodontists, the position of the incisors is a key factor in setting treatment goals. Achieving maximum stability requires that they be positioned in the medullary portion of the alveolar bone, balanced with the lingual and labial musculature. Incorrect orthodontic movements can result in root resorption, dehiscences, or even fenestrations.

An optimal experimental design is a structured data collection plan aimed at maximizing the amount of information gathered. Determining an optimal experimental design, however, relies on the assumption that a predetermined model structure, relating the response and covariates, is known a priori. In practical scenarios, such as dose-response modeling, the form of the model representing the "true" relationship is frequently unknown, although there exists a finite set or pool of potential alternative models.

Introduction: Optimal timing for arteriovenous fistula creation in chronic kidney disease is challenging. Late referral results in hemodialysis (HD) initiation via a central venous catheter (CVC), whereas early referral may lead to unnecessary procedures. We evaluate the predictive value of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the 2-Year Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) in forecasting HD initiation.

The common dolphin, , is the most abundant cetacean species along the western Iberian Peninsula and faces many anthropogenic threats, with bycatch being the most impactful. Its preferred prey, sardine (), has shown fluctuating abundance over the past decade, potentially influencing dolphin distribution. This study provides the first insights into common dolphin distribution along the western Iberian coast, using sighting data from vessel research surveys (2005-2020) to identify hotspot areas while accounting for monthly and seasonal distributions overlapping with sardine abundance.

Purpose: Numerous health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaires are available to assess oral HRQoL in patients undergoing treatment for head and neck (H&N) cancer. These multidimensional instruments should have the capacity to detect meaningful clinical oral function/dental changes at different time points. However, the optimal instrument-or combination of instruments-for assessing oral health and dental needs is not clear.

pH is an important physicochemical property that modulates proteins' structure and interaction patterns. A simple change in a site's protonation state in an enzyme's catalytic pocket can strongly alter its activity and its affinity to substrate, products, or inhibitors. We addressed this pH effect issue by evaluating its impact on donepezil binding to acetylcholinesterase (AChE).

Benign yellow dot maculopathy (BYDM) is a recently described rare, asymptomatic, early onset, and non-progressive macular phenotype. It is characterized by the presence of multiple white-yellow dots encircling the fovea, which are hyperautofluorescent on fundus autofluorescence. Here, we expand on the few reports available by presenting a case series of five Portuguese patients with clinical BYDM phenotype and congruent multimodal imaging, including the second reported unilateral case.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research indicates that cycling at a higher cadence can enhance post-cycling walking speed, but the exact cadence threshold for meaningful improvements is unclear.
  • A study involving 42 young adults assigned them to three groups that cycled at different cadences—TEN, TWENTY, and THIRTY—before measuring gait velocity through a 10-meter walk test.
  • Results showed that only the THIRTY group, cycling at 30% above their self-selected cadence, experienced a statistically and clinically meaningful improvement in walking speed, suggesting this higher cadence is necessary for significant gains in post-cycling gait velocity.

Protonation of key residues in the diphtheria toxin translocation (T)-domain triggered by endosomal acidification is critical for inducing a series of conformational transitions critical for the cellular entry of the toxin. Previous experiments revealed the importance of histidine residues in modulating pH-dependent transitions. They suggested the presence of a "safety latch" preventing premature refolding of the T-domain by a yet poorly understood mechanism.

The therapeutic approach to many solid tumors, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is mainly based on the use of platinum-containing anticancer agents and is often characterized by acquired or intrinsic resistance to the drug. Therefore, the search for safer and more effective drugs is still an open challenge. Two organometallic ruthenium(II)-cyclopentadienyl compounds [Ru(η-CHCHO)(Mebipy)(PPh)] (RT150) and [Ru(η-CHCHOH)(Mebipy)(PPh)][CFSO] (RT151) were tested against a panel of cisplatin-resistant NSCLC cell lines and xenografts.
