Biogas generated from anaerobic digestion can be upgraded to biomethane by photosynthetic biogas upgrading, using CO as a bioresource for algal (cyanobacteria and microalgae) cultivation. This allows the upgrading technology to offer economic and environmental benefits to conventional physiochemical upgrading techniques (which can be energy-intensive and costly) by co-generating biomethane with high-value biomass. However, a critical challenge in implementing this technology in temperate oceanic climatic conditions (as found in Japan, and the northwest coasts of Europe and of North America, with average temperatures ranging between 5 and 20 °C) is the selection of algal strains that must be capable of sustained growth under lower ambient temperatures.

In plant physiology, nitric oxide (NO) is a widely used signaling molecule. It is a free radical and an important component of the N-cycle. NO is produced endogenously inside plant cells, where it participates in multiple functions and provides protection against several abiotic and biotic stresses.

Micronutrients like iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), boron (B), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo) perform significant roles in the regulation of plant metabolism, growth, and development. Micronutrients, namely Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Ni, are involved in oxidative stress and antioxidant defense as they are cofactors or activators of various antioxidant enzymes, viz., superoxide dismutase (Fe, Cu/Zn, Mn, and Ni), catalase (Fe), and ascorbate peroxidase (Fe).

Food, energy, and water resources are intricately interconnected, and nexus provides a holistic approach for addressing these complex links to minimize inefficiencies and waste. Nexus approach and circular economy are considered as effective solutions for sustainability. Quantification of these relations is the first step towards incorporating nexus modeling which helps sustainable production and consumption.

Article Synopsis
  • - Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a rare skin tumor caused by significant sun exposure, often seen as a red bump on the head and neck of older adults.
  • - Diagnosing AFX involves using various immunohistochemical stains, such as CD68 and vimentin, to differentiate it from other skin cancers.
  • - Though AFX tends to recur locally, it rarely spreads to other parts of the body, and treatment usually involves complete surgical removal or specialized surgery techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the use of Pleurotus ostreatus (PO) fungi to pre-treat a mix of agro-wastes (wheat straw, rice straw, and pearl millet straw) combined with varying percentages of biochar to speed up the pre-treatment process for anaerobic digestion.
  • Results showed that the highest lignin removal (40.4%) occurred in the mixed agro-waste group, significantly improving pre-treatment efficiency compared to untreated samples, while biochar reduced the pre-treatment duration.
  • The combination of these methods led to a 83.33% increase in biomethane yield from spent mushroom substrate, demonstrating the potential for enhanced energy and food production with reduced reliance on single biomass sources.

Meigs syndrome is an uncommon entity associated with benign ovarian tumor, pleural effusion, and ascites. Its association with pericardial effusion is extremely rare. We report a case of Meigs syndrome associated with recurrent pericardial effusion that resolved after surgical resection of the ovarian tumor.

The exponential generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) and landfill disposal without any treatment has increased the continuous generation of landfill leachate. Improper MSW and leachate management are contributing to environmental degradation and water and soil pollution, which must be treated. Numerous works have been conducted on leachate treatments for energy and resource recovery.

Graphene, a 2D single-layered carbon sp hybrid substance set in a honeycomb network, is widespread in many carbon-based materials. Due to its extraordinary optical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and magnetic competences as well as its significant specific surface area, it has attracted a lot of interest recently. Synthesizing graphene refers to any process for creating or extracting the material, depending on the desired purity, size, and efflorescence of the finished good.

Objective: Chylopericardium (CPE) is a rare condition associated with accumulation of triglyceride-rich chylous fluid in the pericardial cavity. Due to minimal information on CPE within the literature, we conducted a systematic review of all published CPE cases to understand its clinical characteristics, management and outcomes.

Methods: We performed a literature search and identified cases of patients with CPE from 1946 until May 2021 in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.

Background: There is limited literature on the role of percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) as an adjunct to endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). This study evaluates the role of PTBD in patients with failed ERCP or post-ERCP cholangitis.

Methods: Retrospective evaluation of clinical and intervention records of patients with biliary obstruction referred for PTBD following failed ERCP or post-ERCP cholangitis was performed.

Purpose: To compare the success rate, clinical outcomes, and complications of retroperitoneal (RP) versus transperitoneal (TP) percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) of the necrotic pancreatic fluid collections.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study comprised consecutive patients with acute pancreatitis who underwent PCD of lesser sac collections amenable to drainage via both TP and RP routes. The patients were divided into two groups based on the route of drainage (group I, RP, and group II, TP).

Goals: The aim was to assess the effectiveness of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) against medical therapy (MT).

Background: FMT has shown good outcomes in the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of FMT versus MT for CDI.

White matter lesions (WML) are common in the ageing brain, often arising in a field effect of diffuse white matter abnormality. Although WML are associated with cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), their cause and pathogenesis remain unclear. The current study tested the hypothesis that different patterns of neuroinflammation are associated with SVD compared to AD neuropathology by assessing the immunoreactive profile of the microglial (CD68, IBA1 and MHC-II) and astrocyte (GFAP) markers in ageing parietal white matter (PARWM) obtained from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (CFAS), an ageing population-representative neuropathology cohort.
