A simple, inexpensive, and rapid method for measuring calcium concentrations in colostrum to predict postpartum milk fever in cows using a commercially available water quality test device.

To diagnose milk fever (MF) in dairy cows under clinical practice, measurement of ionized calcium concentrations in blood using point-of-care (POC) devices is required. However, blood sampling poses a significant financial burden on farmers and increases the workload of veterinarians who must visit farms to perform the examinations. The present study aimed to evaluate whether the onset of MF could be predicted using colostrum samples, which can be collected by farmers themselves.

Identification and phylogenetic analysis of novel Piroplasmida detected in the two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus).

This study investigated the pathological and parasitological causes of death in two two-toed sloths (Choloepus didactylus) housed at a zoo in Hokkaido, Japan. Genomic DNA was extracted from the clotted blood of these animals and subsequently examined by nested PCR assays targeting the 18S rRNA and β-tubulin genes. The nucleotide sequences of these genes were determined and a phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rRNA gene was performed.

Long-Term Outcomes of Endovascular Aneurysm Repair in Patients Aged ≤70 Years.

The efficacy of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) against abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in younger patients remains unknown. Hence, the current study aimed to investigate whether the aneurysm-related mortality rate of EVAR is acceptable among patients aged ≤70 years. Among 644 patients, 148 underwent EVAR (EVAR group), and 496 received open surgical repair (OSR group).

Surgical treatment of feline inductive odontogenic tumor by marginal resection in a cat.

Large granular lymphocyte lymphoma in the skin and urinary bladder of a dog.

A 10-year-old female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel presented with hematuria, pollakiuria and skin rash. Based on the histopathological and cytological examination of the skin and bladder mucosa, the dog was diagnosed with large granular lymphocytic (LGL) lymphoma of the bladder and skin. The dog responded well to the initial chemotherapy with nimustine for 3 months.

Intestinal fatty acid-binding protein and osteoprotegerin in anthracycline-induced rabbit models of dilated cardiomyopathy.

Anthracyclines are used for chemotherapy in small animal cancer patients. However, cardiotoxic complications are very common with anthracycline use and induce multi-organ complications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between multi-organ complications, focusing on the liver and intestine, and the serum concentrations of intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in rabbits with daunorubicin-induced dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

Cardiac surgery for patients with schizophrenia: clinical experience of six patients.

Genetic stability of the open reading frame 2 (ORF2) of borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) distributed in cattle in Hokkaido.

Borna disease virus (BoDV) is a neurotropic virus that causes several infections in humans and neurological diseases in a wide range of animals worldwide. BoDV-1 has been molecularly and serologically detected in many domestic and wild animals in Japan; however, the genetic diversity of this virus and the origin of its infection are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated BoDV-1 infection and genetic diversity in samples collected from animals in Hokkaido between 2006 and 2020.

Characteristic imaging findings of the respiratory system in penguins with suspected aspergillosis in an aquarium.

Twenty penguins, including the King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus), Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua), and African penguin (Spheniscus demersus), housed at an aquarium in Hokkaido, Japan, underwent regular health screening via blood test, and five penguins with suspected aspergillosis were extracted. In cases 1 and 2, a thickened membrane and/or fluid level and/or calcification in the air sac were observed on both radiography and computed tomography (CT). These two penguins died after 19 and 43 days, respectively.

Detection and molecular characterization of species in wild-caught pet spiny-tailed lizards.

is a genus of the herbivorous agamid lizards, also known as spiny-tailed lizards or mastigures, which are found in parts of Africa and the Middle East. Currently, several species of this genus are available in the international pet trade in Japan. In this study, two imported wild-caught spiny-tailed lizards (Arabian blue mastigure, and Sudan mastigure, ) were diagnosed with a (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) infection based on the presence of the oocysts in the rectal feces using sucrose flotation and light microscopy examination at a local animal hospital in Tokyo, Japan.

Influence of Type 2 Endoleaks on Long-Term Outcomes after Endovascular Repair for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: A National Hospital Organization Network Study for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms in Japan.

Background: Although endovascular repair (EVAR) is the first-line treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm, type 2 endoleak (EL), which is associated with late sac enlargement or rupture, remains a concern. The present study aimed to assess the influence of type 2 EL on long-term outcomes after EVAR.

Methods: Among 550 patients who underwent EVAR between 2007 and 2013 at 14 Japanese national hospitals, 135 patients had type 2 EL diagnosed on follow-up computed tomography (CT) within 12 months after EVAR (EL2[+] group) and 415 patients did not have EL within 12 months (EL2[-] group).

Introduction: Persistent sciatic artery (PSA) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly. It has several clinical features with the formation of aneurysms. Among the complications, leg ischemia is severe problem and the management involves revascularization and prevention of recurrence.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma on bulbar conjunctiva of third eyelid in a dog.

An 8-year-old castrated Toy poodle presented with swelling and proptosis of the right third eyelid caused by an exophytic mass on the bulbar surface. Histologically, the mass was composed of stratified neoplastic basaloid cells, arranged in nests and interconnecting islands, which were mixed with tubular structures. Immunohistochemically, the basaloid cells were positive for p63 and cytokeratin (CK) 14, and the inner epithelial cells of the tubular structures were positive for CK7, CK8, and CK19.

Synchysis scintillans of the anterior chamber in a dog.

Intraocular cholesterol granuloma (CG) associated with synchysis scintillans (SS) was diagnosed in a 5-year-old spayed Shetland sheepdog. During the initial clinical examination, the patient exhibited SS in the anterior chamber. Canine SS is usually found in the vitreous cavity, and SS in the anterior chamber has not been described.

Pteropine orthoreovirus (PRV) is an emerging bat-borne human pathogen causing severe respiratory illness. To date, however, the evaluation of PRV virulence has largely depended on the limited numbers of clinical cases owing to the lack of animal models. To develop an in vivo model of PRV infection, an inbred C3H mouse strain was infected intranasally with pathogenic PRV strain Miyazaki-Bali/2007.

Morphometric changes in the aortic arch with advancing age in fetal to mature thoroughbred horses.

Aortic rupture is a well recognized cause of sudden death in thoroughbred horses. Some microscopic lesions, such as those caused by cystic medial necrosis and medionecrosis, can lead to aortic rupture. However, these microscopic lesions are also observed in normal horses.

Blindness associated with nasal/paranasal lymphoma in a stallion.

A 29-year-old stallion presented with bilateral blindness following the chronic purulent nasal drainage. The mass occupied the right caudal nasal cavity and right paranasal sinuses including maxillary, palatine and sphenoidal sinuses, and the right-side turbinal and paranasal septal bones, and cribriform plate of ethmoid bone were destructively replaced by the mass growth. The right optic nerve was invaded and involved by the mass, and the left optic nerve and optic chiasm were compressed by the mass which was extended and invaded the skull base.

A case of acute myocardial infarction due to cardiovascular syphilis with aortic regurgitation and bilateral coronary ostial stenosis.

We report an interesting case of a 66-year-old man with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with bilateral coronary ostial stenosis cardiovascular syphilis complicated by aortic regurgitation (AR). A 12-lead electrocardiogram and blood tests on arrival suggested AMI, and echocardiography showed moderate AR. Emergency coronary angiography showed bilateral coronary ostial stenosis.

Late Sac Behavior after Endovascular Aneurysm Repair for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

Background: Sac behavior after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is considered as a surrogate for the risk of late rupture. The purpose of the study is to assess the sac behavior of AAAs after EVAR.

Methods And Results: Late sac enlargement (LSE) (≥5 mm) and late sac shrinkage (LSS) (≥5 mm) were analyzed in 589 consecutive patients who were registered at 14 national centers in Japan.

Characterization of equine hyalocytes: their immunohistochemical properties, morphologies and distribution.

In horse, the characterizations of hyalocytes under the steady state are still unclear. Therefore, we investigated characterizations of hyalocytes in normal equine eyes by their immunohistochemical phenotype, histomorphology and distribution. Thirty-one eyes from 18 horses, divided into 4 groups (G) by age, were used: early (G1) and late gestation (G2) fetuses, 1- to 3-year-old (G3) and 8- to 24-year-old (G4) horses.
