Introduction: Surgical pulmonary valve replacement is commonly required to palliate patients with CHD affecting the right ventricular outflow tract; however, concerns remain about mid- and long-term durability. Post-operative short-term anticoagulation has been hypothesised to improve valve durability.
Methods: This is a single-centre, retrospective study of paediatric patients who underwent surgical pulmonary valve replacement and received a direct oral anticoagulant in addition to aspirin post heart valve insertion.
Introduction: There is wide variation in institutional sedation strategies in paediatric cardiac ICU. Validated tools such as State Behavioral Scale and Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale were created to help standardise sedation practices.
Methods: This is a multi-phase, multicentre, prospective project with the goal of optimising safety and comfort for paediatric cardiac ICU patients.
Objective: To investigate functional outcomes in children who survived extracorporeal life support at 12 months follow-up post-discharge.
Background: Some patients who require extracorporeal life support acquire significant morbidity during their hospitalisation. The Functional Status Scale is a validated tool that allows quantification of paediatric function.
Background: Critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs) are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. This study estimated survival of children with nonsyndromic CCHDs and evaluated relationships between exposures of interest and survival by CCHD severity (univentricular or biventricular function).
Methods: This analysis included 4380 infants with CCHDs (cases) born during 1999-2011 and enrolled in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a multisite, population-based case-control study of major birth defects.
Objective: To profile the gut microbiome (GM) in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) undergoing cardiac surgery compared with matched infants and to investigate the association with growth (weight, length, and head circumference).
Study Design: A prospective study in the cardiac intensive care unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and newborn nursery within the Emory Healthcare system. Characteristics including weight, length, head circumference, and surgical variables were collected.
Objective: Children with prolonged hospital admissions for CHD often develop delirium. Antipsychotic medications (APMs) have been used to treat delirium but are known to prolong the QTc duration. There is concern for prolongation of the QTc interval in cardiac patients who may be more vulnerable to electrocardiogram (ECG) changes and may have postoperative QTc prolongation already.

A quality improvement initiative was conducted to decrease unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotic use by 20%, with sustained change over 12 months.
Methods: We conducted this quality improvement initiative within a quaternary care center.
Children with chronic illnesses report being bullied by peers, yet little is known about bullying among children with heart conditions. Using 2018-2020 National Survey of Children's Health data, the prevalence and frequency of being bullied in the past year (never; annually or monthly; weekly or daily) were compared between children aged 6-17 years with and without heart conditions. Among children with heart conditions, associations between demographic and health characteristics and being bullied, and prevalence of diagnosed anxiety or depression by bullying status were examined.

Background: Reports using a 15-mm mechanical valve for mitral valve replacement (MMVR) in children are limited. We review our center's operative and postoperative experience with this valve.
Methods: We performed a single-center retrospective chart review identifying patients having undergone MMVRs between 2009 and 2022.
Background: Following cardiac surgery, infants often remain endotracheally intubated upon arrival to the cardiac ICU. High-flow nasal cannula and non-invasive positive pressure ventilation are used to support patients following extubation. There are limited data on the superiority of either mode to prevent extubation failure.

Spontaneous effort-induced thrombosis is a rare but reported phenomena that was originally described over 100 years ago. The pathogenesis of this thrombosis arises from an abnormality of the thoracic outlet usually combined with a history of physical activity that includes repetitive arm motions, usually of the dominant hand. We present the case of an adolescent patient who presented to a pediatric emergency department with progressive pain, discoloration, and swelling of the shoulder of his nondominant hand.
