Background: Malnutrition and muscle wasting are common in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD), yet go underdiagnosed. Frequently used indices of nutritional status, such as body mass index, are inflated in patients with ESLD due to a fluid overloaded state. Previous work has demonstrated a strong association between psoas muscle area, a surrogate for sarcopenia, and worse survival following liver transplantation; however, the impact of sarcopenia on post liver transplant outcomes in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) cirrhosis has not been evaluated.

Background: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), formerly known as primary biliary cirrhosis, is a chronic cholestatic liver disease characterized by an immune mediated destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) has been the primary medication for the treatment of PBC, resulting in improved liver tests, resolution of symptoms and increased transplant free survival. Unintentional acetaminophen overdose remains the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States. Patients with underlying liver disease are at higher risk of poor outcomes from acetaminophen overdose.
