There is an urgent need for scalable interventions to promote physical activity in early childhood. An early childhood education and care (ECEC) physical activity policy intervention with implementation support strategies (Play Active) has been proposed for scale-up in Australia. This study sought to assess the scalability of Play Active and describe the Play Active scaling-up strategy.

In 1987, the British Columbia Coalition of the Disabled launched the AIDS and Disability Action Project. This article studies phase one of the project, undertaken from 1987 through 1991, to trace how the Coalition educated the disability community about HIV/AIDS, advocated for HIV/AIDS to be recognized as a disability, and pushed for cooperation between the HIV/AIDS and disability movements. Accordingly, it analyzes the research reports, educational materials, and conference presentations produced by and for the Coalition during this time.

Background: Body mass index (BMI) is sometimes used to determine surgical eligibility for gender-affirming mastectomy (GAM) but there is insufficient data informing these criteria. Given the limitations of single-institution studies, which lack the ability to generalize the potential impact of BMI on GAM complications across various surgical practices, a systematic review is needed.

Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed for all studies that evaluated the relationship between BMI and surgical outcomes after GAM.

Interest in gender-affirming surgery (GAS) is growing in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS), yet GAS exposure during PRS sub-internships remains underemphasized. This study assessed GAS exposure during these rotations via a cross-sectional survey to applicants to a single institution's 2024 integrated residency program, examining demographics and exposure differences by region, program size, and type. Of 295 applicants, 73 (25%) responded.

Background: Patient-directed discharge (PDD) poses a significant challenge in healthcare. Prior studies have shown associations of PDD with factors like race, housing, psychiatric illness, socioeconomic status, and intravenous drug use (IVDU). This study aims to identify factors contributing to PDD in hand infection patients at a public safety-net hospital and to investigate the long-term consequences through readmissions or returns to the emergency department (ED).

This is a state-of-the-art review of historical developments, current approaches and recommended future directions in physical activity (PA) research, practice and policy. Since the early epidemiological studies in the 1950s, PA research has developed from within a biomedical paradigm. There is now a strong evidence base linking PA with positive health outcomes.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a neuromodulation technique that uses electrocautery to damage nerves with thermal energy and interrupt nociception and has primarily been used to treat patients with chronic back pain. While the use of RFA to modulate neuronal innervation of cervical and lumbar facet joints is well studied, research on the applications of RFA to target the thoracic spine is limited despite these facet joints accounting for pain in over 25% of patients with chronic mid-back and upper-back pain. The purpose of this paper is thus to describe RFA and its utilization in the thoracic spine for chronic back pain.

In the 1940s, Abraham Myerson's work on drinking norms in the USA was central to reorienting the approach medical and scientific experts adopted when studying and treating alcoholism. A leading psychiatrist and neurologist from Boston, Myerson argued that tensions between alcohol's ability to satisfy a pleasure-seeking drive and the rise of asceticism had generated ambivalent social attitudes, traditions and expectations towards drinking. This article explores how Myerson identified and employed social factors to uncover the relationship between ambivalent drinking norms, one's gender, ethnic or religious background, and whether one would drink to excess.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome affects up to 6% of the general population, and surgical intervention is often required to ameliorate symptoms. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that often coexists with carpal tunnel syndrome. We hypothesized that patients with preexisting OA use more healthcare resources after carpal tunnel release (CTR) than patients without arthritis.

Background: Digital health interventions (DHIs) are effective in improving poor nutrition, physical inactivity, overweight and obesity. There is evidence suggesting that the impact of DHIs may be enhanced by improving user engagement. However, little is known about the overall effectiveness of strategies on engagement with DHIs.

Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common chromosomal conditions that results in intellectual disability. Children with DS have many different inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions that can affect joint mobility leading to arthralgia and altered joint range of motion (ROM), and it is important to have normal reference values for comparison to determine the degree of impairment. The objective of this study was to establish normative joint ROM values, using a standardized measurement approach, for upper and lower joints of healthy children of both genders with DS.

Background: The aims of this retrospective cohort study were (1) to assess whether the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), a novel neighborhood-level socioeconomic disparities metric, is associated with follow-up nonadherence, and (2) to determine the individual-level socioeconomic factors associated with follow-up nonadherence after treatment of distal radius fractures (DRFs).

Methods: The authors included all patients who underwent nonoperative or operative management of DRFs at an academic level I trauma center between 2019 and 2021. A manual chart review was performed to collect data on ADI, sociodemographic factors, injury characteristics, conservative and surgical interventions, and health care utilization.

Background: Adaptations for scale-up are ubiquitous but are rarely described in detail. Adaptations may be a key reason for the "scale-up penalty" which is when there is a reduction in intervention effect size following scale-up. The Play Active intervention consists of a physical activity policy for early childhood education and care (ECEC) services, with accompanying implementation support strategies.
