How can the shape of biodiversity inform us about cities' ecoclimatic fitness and guide their development? Can we use species as the harbingers of climatic extremes? Eco-climatically sensitive species carry information about hydroclimatic change in their distribution, fitness, and preferential gradients of habitat suitability. Conversely, environmental features outside of the species' fitness convey information on potential ecological anomalies in response to extremes to adapt or mitigate, such as through urban parks. Here, to quantify ecosystems' fitness, we propose a novel computational model to extract multivariate functional ecological networks and their basins, which carry the distributed signature of the compounding hydroclimatic pressures on sentinel species.

Here, we proposed a Benefit-Pressure-Transformation Risk model (BPT) to calculate the Ecosystem Health Index (EHI) for mangrove, salt marsh, and seagrass as core BCEs globally (at a resolution of 1° × 1 °lat-long), based on habitat structure, species morphological features and vulnerability, niche overlap, nature and human pressures, and ecosystem services. Our assessments identify that around 20% of BCEs as vulnerable globally.

Coastal marine ecosystems worldwide are increasingly affected by tide alterations and anthropogenic disturbances affecting the water quality and leading to frequent algal blooms. The microbiome emits informative signals of biological organization and environmental pressure that aid ecosystem monitoring and prediction. Are the many signals reducible to a habitat-specific portfolio that characterizes ecosystem health? Does an optimally structured microbiome imply a resilient microbiome? To answer these questions, we applied our novel Eco-Evo Mandala to bacterioplankton data from four habitats within the Great Barrier Reef, to explore how patterns in community structure, function and genetics signal habitat-specific organization and departures from theoretical optimality. The Mandala revealed communities departing from optimality in habitat-specific ways, mostly along structural and functional traits related to bacterioplankton abundance and interaction distributions (reflected by ϵ and λ as power law and exponential distribution parameters), which are not linearly associated with each other.

Such research has unlocked a wealth of data, which has yielded tremendous insight into the nature of the microbial communities, including their interactions and effects, both within a host and in an external environment as part of an ecological community. A wide range of research has promised new tools for forecasting infectious disease dynamics, but little of that research is currently being applied in practice, because tools do not address key public health needs, do not produce probabilistic forecasts, have not been evaluated on external data, or do not provide sufficient forecast skill to be useful. We developed an open collaborative forecasting challenge to assess probabilistic forecasts for seasonal epidemics of dengue, a major global public health problem.
