The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of forage fiber and starch sources replacement with delactosed whey permeate (DLP) on lactation performance and total-tract nutrient digestibility of high-producing dairy cows. Ninety-six multiparous Holstein cows (88 ± 36 DIM) and dietary treatments were randomly assigned to 12 pens of 8 cows for an 8-wk treatment period, after a 2-wk covariate period. Treatments were diets fed without DLP (CON), 5% replacement of corn silage with DLP (LCS), and 5% replacement of high-moisture corn with DLP (LHMC).

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of dietary starch concentration by replacing high-moisture corn with soy hulls and a direct-fed microbial (DFM) containing Bacillus subtilis 810 and Bacillus licheniformis 809 on the lactation performance, feeding behavior, total-tract nutrient digestibility, and enteric CH emissions of dairy cows. Sixty-four multiparous Holstein cows (67 ± 24 DIM and 729 ± 60 kg of BW at the beginning of the covariate period) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement for a 12-wk treatment period, after a 1-wk acclimation period and 2-wk covariate period. Portable near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) offers the opportunity of a rapid measurement of forage dry matter concentration, allowing producers to make faster adjustments in real time. This study compared dry matter (DM) concentration predictions of three units of a portable near-infrared reflectance spectrometer (pNIRS) with conventional forced-air oven drying (48 h at 60 °C) using corn forage and silage samples. The objective of this study was to examine the enzyme activities of an enzymatic complex produced by Pleurotus ostreatus in different pH and the effects of adding increased application rates of this enzymatic complex on the fermentation profile, chemical composition, and in situ ruminal disappearance of whole-plant corn silage (WPCS) at the onset of fermentation and 30 d after ensiling. This study aimed to assess the effects of a heterofermentative microbial inoculant and storage length on fermentation profile, aerobic stability, and nutrient composition in whole-plant sorghum silage (WPSS) from different varieties. Experiment 1, a completely randomized design with a 2 × 3 factorial treatment arrangement, evaluated microbial inoculation [CON (50 mL distilled water) or LBLD ( DSM 21762, DSM 12856, and DSM 32074; 300,000 CFU/g of fresh forage)] and storage length (14, 28, or 56 d) in forage WPSS. The LBLD silage had lower pH compared to CON, and greater concentrations of succinic acid, ethanol, 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD), 1-propanol, 2,3-butanediol and total acids.
