Purpose: Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are defined by the loss of muscle strength and mass. Both diseases pose a growing global challenge. Their prevalences vary between studied populations.

Recommendations from guidelines can therefore only be applied to these patient groups to a limited extent. Due to the complexity and vulnerability of multimorbid, older adults, an interdisciplinary approach to care is required.

The orthogeriatric ward round is particularly important from a geriatric perspective. This article presents important aspects and contents of the geriatric ward round and is intended to provide recommendations for geriatricians working in geriatric trauma centers on trauma surgery wards.

The combination of obesity and sarcopenia is called sarcopenic obesity. Because of the aging of the population in many countries around the world, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are a challenge for global health policy.

Under this therapy, the patient developed dysphagia, thyroiditis with hypothyroidism, myositis, and myocarditis, which required, due to third-degree AV block, the installation of a pacemaker. The patient received high-dose cortisone therapy, a thyroid hormone substitution, and pyridostigmine for symptom control.

Background: Osteoporosis, age and frailty significantly impacts outcomes in fragility fractures of the pelvis, increasing morbidity and mortality. Identifying frailty aids in risk stratification and personalized care plans, enhancing recovery and reducing complications in older adults. Orthogeriatric co-management, an interdisciplinary approach combining orthopedics and geriatrics, optimizes care for older adults with fragility fractures.

Geriatrics can enable and monitor a holistic care of older people through a comprehensive geriatric assessment in a structured way. Therefore, it must be integrated much more closely with preventive, rehabilitative and acute care units. Geriatrics are not seen in any aspects as a replacement for general practitioners or in-hospital structures but much more as a supplement to them.

A holistic geriatric evaluation revealed orthostatic dysregulation and an underlying multifactorial gait disorder exacerbated by visual impairment. Ophthalmological findings included left central retinal artery branch occlusion and cataracts.

An interdisciplinary collaboration and an individualized, patient-centered approach are essential to ensure an optimized preoperative period and to improve perioperative safety. Preoperative responsibilities of trauma surgery include in the first step the identification of fragility fractures and the necessity for geriatric involvement.

The primary objective of this economic analysis was to determine the cost-utility of GFCs compared with usual care centres.
Methods: The primary analysis was a cost-utility analysis that measured the cost per incremental quality-adjusted life-year gained from treatment of hip fracture in GFCs compared with treatment in usual care centres from the societal perspective over a 1-year time horizon.
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO ID: CRD42021250467) was to evaluate the effects of exercise on low-trauma overall and major osteoporotic fractures (hip, spine, forearm, or humerus fractures) and to determine the corresponding effect of supervision of the exercise program. Our systematic search of six literature databases according to the PRISMA guideline was conducted from January 1, 2013 (ie, date of our last search) to May 22, 2021, and included controlled clinical exercise trials with (i) individuals aged ≥45 years, (ii) cohorts without therapies/diseases related to fractures, (iii) observation periods of ≥3 months, and (iv) the number of low-trauma fractures listed separately for the exercise (EG) and control (CG) groups. We included 20 intervention studies with 21 EGs and 20 CGs comprising a pooled number of participant-years of n = 11.

Cardiovascular diseases have the highest prevalence in advanced age. Nevertheless, older age groups are frequently underrepresented in randomized controlled trials (RCT). Consequently, in many cases the evidence is often insufficient.

Purpose: We compared the prevalence of COVID-19 and related mortality in nursing homes (NHs) in 14 countries until October 2021. We explored the relationship between COVID-19 mortality in NHs with the average size of NHs and with the COVID-19 deaths at a population level.
Methods: The total number of COVID-19 cases and COVID-19-related deaths in all NHs as well as the total number of NHs and NH beds were provided by representatives of 14 countries.

In the general population, the prevalence of mild, usually asymptomatic hyponatremia ranges from 1,7-7,7 %. With increasing age, it rises to 11,6 % in > 75-year-olds. The prevalence is much higher in nursing home residents and hospital patients.

Flow experience, a feeling of being absorbed in an activity without reflection and with maximum depth, has positive effects on psychological and physical well-being, performance, and life satisfaction. Little research has been done on flow experience in old age, and there are no studies on geriatric patients. In the present study, elderly patients (mean age:81.

This might be due to the paucity of studies, but also to the great variety of participants and study characteristics that may dilute study results. The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of exercise on BMD changes with rational eligibility criteria.

In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we determined the effect of training frequency on (areal) bone mineral density (BMD) at lumbar spine (LS) and hip. Reviewing seven electronic databases up to April 2021, we conducted a systematic review of the literature according to the PRISMA statement.
