Article Synopsis
  • Gout, a type of arthritis linked to elevated uric acid levels, is becoming more common in China due to better living standards and is now a significant health issue alongside diabetes.
  • Researchers conducted a study using wastewater analysis in 257 cities to track gout prevalence, measuring febuxostat levels as a biomarker for gout medication.
  • Results showed an average febuxostat concentration of 53.05 ng/L, with an estimated gout prevalence of 1.30%, closely matching existing official estimates, indicating that wastewater-based epidemiology can be an effective method for monitoring gout rates in real time.

Dyslipidemia, recognized as a predominant risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD), remains a pressing health concern worldwide, particularly in China with nearly 40 % of the population adversely suffering. Fenofibrate, as one of the most commonly used drugs for dyslipidemia therapy, excreted as the format of fenofibrate-acid, which showed considerable stability in sewage samples and could be detected as WBE-biomarkers to monitor the prevalence of dyslipidemia. In this work, we reported the first research on estimating the prevalence of dyslipidemia by WBE approach.

As the dangers of cannabis abuse draw attention worldwide, it is necessary to assess the level of consumption in the community. The analysis of 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH) excreted in wastewater can provide information for a defined catchment area. Due to its hydrophobic nature and absence of ionizable groups, its detection is challenging.
