Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) remains a major concern in swine production. This study investigates the molecular epidemiology of lineage 1 and lineage 3 PRRSV-2 in Taiwan between 2018 and 2024. A total of 43,977 samples were collected across 15 counties in Taiwan, and 13,611 tested positive for PRRSV by real-time PCR.

: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has a major impact on swine productivity. Modified-live vaccines (MLVs) are used to aid in control. We investigated the cross-protection provided by a lineage 7 PRRSV MLV against a lineage 1 isolate under laboratory conditions and a lineage 3 challenge under field conditions in Taiwan.

Two variants of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), PRRSV 1 and PRRSV 2, have caused abortion in pregnant sows and respiratory distress in nursery pigs worldwide. PRRSV 2 has been thoroughly researched in Taiwan since 1993; however, the first case of PRRSV 1 was not reported until late 2018. To decipher the genetic characteristics of PRRSV 1 in Taiwan, open reading frame 5 (ORF5) genes of PRRSV 1 strains collected from 11 individual pig farms in 2019-2020 were successfully sequenced.
