Article Synopsis
  • A 25-year-old woman was diagnosed with a dural arteriovenous fistula and underwent coil embolization, leading to exophthalmos.
  • Fifteen years later, she experienced vision issues due to a meningioma, which was surgically removed, but recurrence was detected years later along with additional meningiomas and cavernous malformations.
  • The case suggests that de novo meningiomas and cavernous malformations may arise after radiation exposure during endovascular therapy, emphasizing the need for long-term monitoring post-treatment.

Background: Visceral hypersensitivity in functional dyspepsia can be localized or widespread, and there is no simple method of assessment. Measuring interoceptive accuracy at different sites provides an assessment of perceptual hypersensitivity to specific ecological phenomena. The purpose of this study was to characterize visceral hypersensitivity by comparing gastric sensory and cardiac perceptual tests in patients with postprandial distress syndrome and in healthy volunteers.

The 2022 edition of the Guidelines for the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer described rechallenge therapy as a backward treatment for unresectable colorectal cancer, but currently, there is no evidence to support its benefit. We reviewed 6 cases of rechallenge therapy in which tumor marker trends could be followed in our department. Two cases had a rapid decline in tumor markers that was maintained for 7-8 months.

Elastin-like peptides (ELPs) are synthetic peptides that mimic the characteristic hydrophobic amino acid repeat sequences of elastin and exhibit temperature-dependent reversible self-assembly properties. ELPs are expected to be used as temperature-responsive biomolecular materials across diverse industrial and research fields, and there is a requirement for a straightforward method to mass-produce them. Previously, we demonstrated that phenylalanine-containing ELP analogs, namely, (FPGVG) , can undergo coacervation with short chains (n = 5).

Background/aim: Previous studies have identified several inflammatory biomarkers that are useful as prognostic biomarkers for various cancer types. However, the fibrinogen-to-lymphocyte ratio (FLR) has not been addressed in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Here, we aimed to examine the value of pretreatment FLR as a prognostic marker in patients who received definitive radiotherapy for hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HpSCC).

Article Synopsis
  • Eating alone can lead to psychological distress, but the impact of eating together online on autonomic nervous system functions was previously unstudied.
  • In a pilot study, healthy volunteers were divided into two groups: one eating together online and the other eating alone, to measure changes in heart rate variability (HRV).
  • Results showed that participants who ate together online experienced a significant increase in HRV, indicating improved autonomic nervous system function and suggesting that social eating may promote physiological synchrony. *

Although surgical resection is the only available treatment to achieve long-term survival in biliary tract cancer, many cases are often identified at an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. Radiotherapy may be an alternative option to prolong survival in cases with locally advanced unresectable disease. While there are some reports of long-term survival after radiotherapy for unresectable biliary tract cancer, it is rare that clinical symptoms are exhibited by peritoneal dissemination more than 8 years after radiotherapy and that resection can be performed.

Expectations for treatment have a favorable effect on the subsequent course of pain and behavior in patients. It is not known whether receiving hydrodissection while patients view their ultrasound image with doctors (visual feedback) is associated with positive treatment expectations. This was an exploratory, prospective, observational clinical trial.

Pentacene derivatives with both π-radical- and TIPS-substituents (1m and 1p) were synthesized and their photochemical properties and excited-state dynamics were evaluated. The pentacene-radical-linked systems 1m (1p) showed a remarkable improvement in photochemical stability, which was 187 (139) times higher than that of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene. Transient absorption spectroscopy showed that this remarkable photostabilization is due to the ultrafast intersystem crossing induced by effective π-conjugation between the radical substituent and pentacene moiety.

Article Synopsis
  • Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) often develops in cancer patients due to limited movement or posture, and this study aimed to explore how common MPS is among those with incurable cancer while evaluating treatment through trigger point injections (TPI).
  • In a study involving 101 patients with primarily advanced cancer (93.1% had distant metastases), 38.6% were found to have MPS, with poor performance status being a significant risk factor.
  • TPI was administered to treat MPS lesions, showing a significant reduction in pain levels from an average Numerical Rating Scale score of 7.95 to 4.30 after treatment. *

Multinuclear Au complexes with two or three nitronyl nitroxide-2-ide radical anion and phosphine-ligand scaffolds, (NN-Au) -1 o, (NN-Au) -1 m, and (NN-Au) -1 p, have been synthesized to investigate the influence of Au -Au (aurophilic) interactions on the properties of multispin molecular systems. The desired complexes were successfully prepared in moderate yields in a one-pot synthesis from the corresponding phosphine ligand, Au source, parent NN, and sodium hydroxide. Among the prepared complexes, (NN-Au) -1 o, in which an aurophilic interaction was clearly observed by crystal structure analysis, showed characteristic spin-spin interactions, electrochemical properties, and solvatochromic behavior.

The locally accumulated damage by tropical cyclones (TCs) can intensify substantially when these cyclones move more slowly. While some observational evidence suggests that TC motion might have slowed significantly since the mid-20th century (), the robustness of the observed trend and its relation to anthropogenic warming have not been firmly established (-). Using large-ensemble simulations that directly simulate TC activity, we show that future anthropogenic warming can lead to a robust slowing of TC motion, particularly in the midlatitudes.

Slow-moving tropical cyclones (TCs) can cause heavy rain because of their duration of influence. Combined with expected increase in rain rates associated with TCs in a warmer climate, there is growing interest in TC translation speed in the past and future. Here we present that a slowdown trend of the translation speed is not simulated for the period 1951-2011 based on historical model simulations.
