Contrasting pattern of methanotrophs in dry tropical forest soils: effect of soil nitrogen, carbon and moisture.

Population dynamics of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) was measured for 2 consecutive years for four forest and one savanna sites in seasonally dry tropical regions of India. The soils were nutrient-poor and well drained. These sites differed in vegetational cover and physico-chemical features of soils.

Sudden collapse of a young female cross country runner.

The case is reported of a young previously healthy female cross country runner who collapsed on completion of a cross country run. The cause of the collapse was non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema as a manifestation of hyponatraemic encephalopathy. The concurrent occurrence of non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema and encephalopathy due to hyponatraemia is unusual.

Dynamics of viable nitrifier community, N-mineralization and nitrification in seasonally dry tropical forests and savanna.

The study was conducted in Vindhyan region, to assess the N-mineralization, nitrification and size of viable community of ammonium- and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria as affected by different sites and seasons. Six different ecosystems (four forests and two savannas), which differ in terms of topography, vegetation and moisture status, were selected for the present study. The soils of the study sites differ significantly in its physico-chemical properties.

Modulation of carbonic anhydrase activity in two nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria, Nostoc calcicola and Anabaena sp.

The activity of enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) was investigated in two diazotrophic cyanobacteria, Anabaena sp. (ARM 629) and Nostoc calcicola, in the presence of CO2/NaHCO3 and different inhibitors. The CA activity increased when the cells were pretreated with a high concentration of CO2/NaHCO3 and then transferred to ambient level CO2.

Biochemical and molecular markers in renal cell carcinoma: an update and future prospects.

Cancer is a big problem in the developed world as well as in developing countries. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 3% of adult malignancies and 90-95% of neoplasms arising from the kidney. RCC is more common in men than in women (2:1), and it most often occurs in patients between the ages of 50-70 years.

Reduced expression of Hugl-1, the human homologue of Drosophila tumour suppressor gene lgl, contributes to progression of colorectal cancer.

The human gene, human giant larvae (Hugl-1/Llg1/Lgl1) has significant homology to the Drosophila tumour suppressor gene lethal(2)giant larvae (lgl). The lgl gene codes for a cortical cytoskeleton protein, Lgl, that binds Myosin II and is involved in maintaining cell polarity and epithelial integrity. The human protein, Hugl-1 contains several conserved functional domains found in Lgl, suggesting that these proteins may have closely related functions.

Biochemical and genetic characterization of Yra1p in budding yeast.

Yra1p and its vertebrate homologues bind to the mRNA export factor Mex67p/TAP and are thought to play a role in mRNA export in vivo. To further characterize Yra1p, we used immunoaffinity chromatography to purify endogenous Yra1p complexes. These experiments demonstrated that two importin beta homologues (Kap123p and Pse1p) and the poly A tail-binding proteins Pab1p and Nab2p associate with Yra1p.

Cyanobacteria in Antarctica: ecology, physiology and cold adaptation.

Cyanobacterial species composition of fresh water and terrestrial ecosystems and chemical environment of water in Schirmacher Oasis in Continental Antarctica was investigated. Over 35 species of cyanobacteria were recorded. Diazotrophic species both heterocystous and unicellular contributed more than half to the count except in lake ecosystem.
