Teratoma of mediastinum is rare germ cell tumor. Anterior mediastinum is the most common extragonadal site. Benign mediastinal teratoma accounts for 60% of all mediastinal germ cell tumors.

Molecular Characterization of FZD4, LRP5, and TSPAN12 in Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy.

Purpose: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by the failure of peripheral retinal vascularization. The genes FZD4, LRP5, and TSPAN12 are known to be associated with the autosomal inheritance form of FEVR. In this study, we performed mutation screening for FZD4, LRP5, and TSPAN12 in patients with clinical diagnosis of FEVR.

Mutational spectrum of the SPAST and ATL1 genes in Korean patients with hereditary spastic paraplegia.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a genetically heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by insidiously progressive lower-extremity weakness and spasticity. Spastic paraplegia 4 (SPAST) is the most common type of uncomplicated autosomal dominant HSP (40% of such cases), and spastic paraplegia 3A (ATL1) is the second most common. Here, we conducted mutational analysis of the SPAST and/or ATL1 genes in 206 unrelated patients with HSP.

Cervical Meningomyelitis After Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection.

Epidural steroid injections (ESI) are a common treatment for back pain management. ESI-related complications have increased with the growing number of procedures. We report a case of cervical meningomyelitis followed by multiple lumbar ESI.

Meta-Analysis of Sodium Bicarbonate Therapy for Prevention of Cardiac Surgery-Associated Acute Kidney Injury.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether or not perioperative administration of sodium bicarbonate had a preventive effect on cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) as shown in randomized controlled trials.

Design: The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis using MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and KoreaMed.

Setting: The authors searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and KoreaMed without language and date restrictions.

Corosolic acid enhances 5-fluorouracil-induced apoptosis against SNU-620 human gastric carcinoma cells by inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin.

5‑Fluorouracil (5‑FU), one of the oldest anticancer therapeutic agents, is increasingly being administered in cancer chemotherapy. In the present study, the anticancer effects of 5‑FU combined with corosolic acid (CRA) were determined in SNU‑620 human gastric carcinoma cells and the underlying mechanisms were examined. A combination treatment of 5‑FU and CRA inhibited the viability of cells additively.

Changes in proliferating and apoptotic markers of leiomyoma following treatment with a selective progesterone receptor modulator or gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist.

Objective: To evaluate changes in proliferating and apoptotic markers of myoma tissue from patients treated with a selective progesterone receptor modulator (SPRM) or GnRH agonist by measuring expression of PDGF-A mRNA, IGF-1 mRNA, bcl-2 mRNA, and PCNA and caspase-3 protein.

Study Design: Between December 2013 and July 2014, women with symptomatic leiomyoma were divided into control (no treatment before surgery), SPRM (treatment with ulipristal acetate [SPRM] for 3 months before surgery), and GnRHa (treatment with leuprolide acetate [GnRH agonist] for 3 months before surgery) groups. Tissue specimens were collected from the myoma core and normal myometrium of all patients.

Combined exercise ameliorates ovariectomy-induced cognitive impairment by enhancing cell proliferation and suppressing apoptosis.

Objective: Estrogen plays an important role in cognitive function, including attention, learning, and memory, and affects the structure and function of brain areas. We investigated the effects of combined exercise on memory deficits induced by ovariectomy (OVX) in relation to cell proliferation and apoptosis in the hippocampus.

Methods: Rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham, sham and exercise, OVX, and OVX and exercise.

KRAS discordance between primary and recurrent tumors after radical resection of colorectal cancers.

Background: Although KRAS shows high concordance between primary and metastatic colorectal cancers, recent studies have reported discordance and intra-tumoral heterogeneity. To evaluate KRAS concordance between primary colorectal cancers and recurrent tumors after radical resection, we performed this study.

Methods: Between January 2007 and August 2013, among patients underwent radical resection for primary colorectal cancers and tissue sampling of recurred tumors including resection or biopsy, 74 patients whose both primary and recurred tumor tissues were available for KRAS analysis were enrolled.

Oncologic results and prognostic predictors of patients with locally advanced rectal cancer showing ypN0 after radical surgery following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy.

Purpose: Adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer after radical surgery following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) regardless of the final pathologic stage. However, the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy in ypN0 patients remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oncologic outcomes and analyze the prognostic factors for ypN0 patients in order to estimate prognosis and establish an effective adjuvant chemotherapy strategy for stage 0-II rectal cancers after radical surgery following NCRT.

The Impact of PBRM1 Expression as a Prognostic and Predictive Marker in Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Purpose: PBRM1, a SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex gene, is the second most frequently mutated gene in clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Although previous studies showed that loss of PBRM1 expression was associated with poor prognosis of renal cell carcinoma, these studies were performed on earlier stage, surgically resected renal cell carcinoma. Accordingly we investigated the PBRM1 expression profile in patients with stage IV renal cell carcinoma to determine the prognostic and predictive value of PBRM1.

Rapid and specific identification of Brucella abortus using the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay.

Impact of intratumoral expression levels of fluoropyrimidine-metabolizing enzymes on treatment outcomes of adjuvant S-1 therapy in gastric cancer.

We analyzed the expression levels of fluoropyrimidine-metabolizing enzymes (thymidylate synthase [TS], dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase [DPD], thymidine phosphorylase [TP] and orotate phosphoribosyltransferase [OPRT]) to identify potential biomarkers related to treatment outcomes in gastric cancer (GC) patients receiving adjuvant S-1 chemotherapy. In this study, 184 patients who received curative gastrectomy (D2 lymph node dissection) and adjuvant S-1 were included. Immunohistochemistry and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction were performed to measure the protein and mRNA levels of TS, DPD, TP, and OPRT in tumor tissue.

Chronic alcohol consumption potentiates the development of diabetes through pancreatic β-cell dysfunction.

Chronic ethanol consumption is well established as a major risk factor for type-2 diabetes (T2D), which is evidenced by impaired glucose metabolism and insulin resistance. However, the relationships between alcohol consumption and the development of T2D remain controversial. In particular, the direct effects of ethanol consumption on proliferation of pancreatic β-cell and the exact mechanisms associated with ethanol-mediated β-cell dysfunction and apoptosis remain elusive.

Analysis of gene expression in cyclooxygenase-2-overexpressed human osteosarcoma cell lines.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor, generally affecting young people. While the etiology of osteosarcoma has been largely unknown, recent studies have suggested that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) plays a critical role in the proliferation, migration, and invasion of osteosarcoma cells. To understand the mechanism of action of COX-2 in the pathogenesis of osteosarcoma, we compared gene expression patterns between three stable COX-2-overexpressing cell lines and three control cell lines derived from U2OS human osteosarcoma cells.

Prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasm after kidney transplantation: surveillance based on the results of screening colonoscopy.

Background And Aim: The aim of this study was to determine whether the prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasms increases in kidney transplant recipients and to define the appropriate duration for surveillance colonoscopy after kidney transplantation (TPL).

Methods: Our study consisted of 248 kidney transplant patients who underwent a colonoscopy at Seoul National University Hospital from 1996 to 2008. For each patient, two or more age- and sex-matched controls were identified from a population of asymptomatic individuals.

The effects of a single bout pilates exercise on mRNA expression of bone metabolic cytokines in osteopenia women.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a single bout pilates exercise on mRNA expression of bone metabolic cytokines in elderly osteopenia women.

Methods: We selected 11 people of elderly osteopenia women and loaded a single bout pilates exercise about RPE 10-14 level. The blood samples were collected before, immediately after and 60 minute after pilates exercise, then examined calcium metabolic markers in serum and extracted peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) from whole blood and confirmed mRNA expression of bone metabolic cytokines from PBMC.

Case of mild Schmid-type metaphyseal chondrodysplasia with novel sequence variation involving an unusual mutational site of the COL10A1 gene.

Schmid-type metaphyseal chondrodysplasia (MCDS) is characterized by short stature with short legs, bowing of the long bones, coxa vara, and waddling gait. MCDS is a relatively common form of MCD. Most mutations that cause MCDS occur within the carboxyl-terminal non-collagenous domain (NC1) of the COL10A1 gene.

Nephroprotection of plantamajoside in rats treated with cadmium.

Cadmium (Cd), an environmental and industrial pollutant, generates free radicals responsible for oxidative stress. Cd can also lead to various renal toxic damage such as the proximal tubules and glomerulus dysfunction. Plantamajoside (PMS), a major compound of Plantago asiatica (PA), was reported to have the antioxidant effects.

Garlic powder intake and cardiovascular risk factors: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials.

Background/objectives: Although preclinical studies suggest that garlic has potential preventive effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, clinical trials and reports from systematic reviews or meta-analyses present inconsistent results. The contradiction might be attributed to variations in the manufacturing process that can markedly influence the composition of garlic products. To investigate this issue further, we performed a meta-analysis of the effects of garlic powder on CVD risk factors.

Acute idiopathic pancreatitis in pregnancy: a case study.

Acute pancreatitis during pregnancy is a rare event, and can be associated with high maternal mortality and fetal loss. Gallstone disease is thought to be the most common causative factor of acute pancreatitis, but, in many cases, the cause remains unclear. We report a case of a 36-year-old woman at 35 wk of gestation, who presented with severe pain confined to the upper abdomen and radiating to the back.

Diagnostic application of an extensive gene panel for Leber congenital amaurosis with severe genetic heterogeneity.

Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder and the most severe form of inherited retinal dystrophy. We report results of a diagnostic application of an extensive gene panel composed of 204 retinal dystrophy-related genes and discuss its feasibility as a diagnostic tool. Nineteen unrelated LCA patients were included in the study: two patients for validation purposes of our gene panel, 15 previously analyzed patients with no identified mutations, and two previously unanalyzed patients.

Shinzami Korean purple-fleshed sweet potato extract prevents ischaemia-reperfusion-induced liver damage in rats.

Background: This study was designed to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of an extract from Shinzami, a variety of purple sweet potato, in rats injured by hepatic ischaemia-reperfusion (I/R).

Results: Pretreatment with Shinzami extract decreased the aspirate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase serum levels in our hepatic I/R rat model. The glutathione level and superoxide dismutase activity level were significantly higher in the rats pretreated with the Shinzami extract compared with the hepatic I/R rats, and the glutathione peroxidase activity level was higher in pretreated rats.
