Post-Operative Multiple Thrombosis Associated with Patent Foramen Ovale: Embolic Stroke, Right Atrial Thrombi, Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty frequently develop post-operative complication, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism. However, it is not common coexisting deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary thromboembolisms, right atrial thrombus and acute cerebral infarction raised by thrombus through patent foramen ovale. We reported the patient who had multiple thrombi which were accompanied with a cryptogenic ischemic stroke and associated with patent foramen ovale after operation.

The effects of work surface hardness on mechanical stress, muscle activity, and wrist postures.

Background: Contact pressure is a risk factor which can contribute to musculoskeletal disorders.

Objective: The objective of the present study was to determine whether a work surface with a soft, pliable front edge could reduce contact pressure, muscle activity, and subjective musculoskeletal comfort, and improve wrist posture relative to a conventional, hard work surface.

Methods: In a repeated-measures blinded experiment with eighteen subjects (8 females and 10 males), contact pressure, wrist posture, typing productivity, perceived fatigue, wrist and shoulder muscle activity, and subjective comfort were compared between the two different work surfaces during keyboard use, mouse use and mixed mouse and keyboard use.

Influence of shear stress on erythrocyte aggregation.

Shear stress is known to induce platelet activation and aggregation. The red blood cell (RBC) aggregation test requires the application of shear stress for the cells to disaggregate for initialization. We tested the hypothesis that applying shear stress may activate platelets, which can influence RBC aggregation.

Background: We aimed to determine the major contributing component of metabolic syndrome (MetS) that results in an elevated small dense LDL cholesterol (sdLDL-C) concentration and sdLDL-C/LDL-C ratio.

Methods: Four hundred and forty-seven subjects (225 men; 222 women) with MetS were randomly selected from the Korean Metabolic Syndrome Research Initiatives-Seoul cohort study. Age- and sex-matched healthy controls (181 men; 179 women) were also randomly selected from the same cohort.

The Role of the Pleckstrin Homology Domain-containing Protein CKIP-1 in Activation of p21-activated Kinase 1 (PAK1).

Upon growth factor stimulation, PAK1 is recruited to the plasma membrane and activated by a mechanism that requires its phosphorylation at Ser-223 by the protein kinase CK2. However, the upstream signaling molecules that regulate this phosphorylation event are not clearly defined. Here, we demonstrate a major role of the CK2α-interacting protein CKIP-1 in activation of PAK1.

Decline in non-smoking workers' urine cotinine levels after increased smoking regulation in Korea.

Objectives: To identify any association between implementing smoking regulation policies and workers' urine cotinine concentration levels in Korea.

Methods: From the first stage of the Korean National Environmental Health Survey conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Research from 2009 to 2011, 2,475 non-smoking workers selected. We analyzed the trend in the changes of cotinine concentration in urine using the general linear model and linear regression, in various jobs as categorized by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and Korea Standard Classification of Occupations (KSCO).

Due to recent advances of bioinformatics and high throughput sequencing technology, discovery of regulatory non-coding RNAs in bacteria has been increased to a great extent. Based on this bandwagon, many studies searching for trans-acting small non-coding RNAs in streptococci have been performed intensively, especially in the important human pathogen, group A and B streptococci. However, studies for cis-encoded non-coding antisense RNAs in streptococci have been scarce.

Assessing glucose uptake through the yeast hexose transporter 1 (Hxt1).

The transport of glucose across the plasma membrane is mediated by members of the glucose transporter family. In this study, we investigated glucose uptake through the yeast hexose transporter 1 (Hxt1) by measuring incorporation of 2-NBDG, a non-metabolizable, fluorescent glucose analog, into the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We find that 2-NBDG is not incorporated into the hxt null strain lacking all glucose transporter genes and that this defect is rescued by expression of wild type Hxt1, but not of Hxt1 with mutations at the putative glucose-binding residues, inferred from the alignment of yeast and human glucose transporter sequences.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection of a large colonic lipoma: Report of two cases.

A colonic lipoma is a very rare benign tumor that is usually asymptomatic and is found incidentally by colonoscopy. Patients with a large colonic lipoma may present with symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, and colonic obstruction or intussusceptions. We report two patients with large colonic lipomas and symptoms.

Sodium and potassium intake was assessed on the basis of its respective excretion levels in 24 hr urine samples. Perioperative and long-term renal functional outcomes of robotic versus laparoscopic partial nephrectomy: a multicenter matched-pair comparison.

Purpose: We compared perioperative and long-term renal functional outcomes of robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) with laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) for small renal masses.

Materials And Methods: A total of 1,032 patients were included for evaluation; propensity score matching was performed to adjust for potential baseline confounders, which resulted in 195 LPNs matched to 195 RAPNs. Patient characteristics including preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were investigated, and postoperative results were evaluated.

Endovascular Rescue of a Narrowed Aorto-Aortic Bypass Graft in a Patient with Takayasu's Arteritis.

We report a case of successful endovascular treatment of a pseudoaneurysm and the obstruction of an aorto-aortic bypass graft, which had been performed to treat Takayasu's arteritis fifteen years prior, at the thoracic aorta. Along with the immediate relief of proximal hypertension that had caused severe heart failure, the successful exclusion of the pseudoaneurysm and the patency of the stem graft were maintained three years after the procedure.

The effect of key size of touch screen virtual keyboards on productivity, usability, and typing biomechanics.

Objective: We investigated whether different virtual keyboard key sizes affected typing force exposures, muscle activity, wrist posture, comfort, and typing productivity.

Background: Virtual keyboard use is increasing and the physical exposures associated with virtual keyboard key sizes are not well documented.

Method: Typing forces, forearm/shoulder muscle activity, wrist posture, subjective comfort, and typing productivity were measured from 21 subjects while they were typing on four different virtual keyboards with square key sizes, which were 13, 16, 19, and 22 mm on each side with 2-mm between-key spacing.

Objectives: In this study, we report a simple closure technique of the renal parenchyma using a knotless running suture with Hem-o-lok(®) (Teleflex(®) Medical, Research Triangle Park, NC) clips (running-clip renorrhaphy) to minimize warm ischemic time (WIT) and reduce intraoperative blood loss (IBL).

Materials And Methods: From 2008 to 2010, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) was performed by traditional interrupted knot-tying suture renorrhaphy (Group I; n=28). Since then, from 2011 to 2013, LPN was performed by running-clip technique renorrhaphy (Group II; n=51).

Introduction: Although radiography is considered the standard for confirming the position of nutrition access devices, it is sometimes difficult to visualize their tips. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how well pediatric residents could confirm placement via radiography of feeding tubes and intravenous (IV) nutrition catheter support in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Objective: A groove technique for securing an electrode connector was described as an alternative surgical technique in deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery to avoid electrode connector-related complications, such as skin erosion, infection, and migration.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 109 patients undergoing one of two techniques; the standard technique (52 patients using 104 electrodes) and the groove technique (57 patients using 109 electrodes) for securing the electrode connector in DBS surgery, regardless of patient disease. In the standard percutaneous tunneling technique, the connector was placed on the vertex of the cranial surface.

Occurrence of anisakid nematode larvae in chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) caught off Korea.

Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is a pelagic fish species widely distributing in the Indo-Pacific and a commercially important fish species in Korea. It is known to harbor anisakid nematodes larvae, and ingesting the raw or undercooked fish can accidentally cause human infection. In this study, we isolated the nematode larvae in 417 chub mackerel caught from 7 sampling locations around the Korean Peninsula in 2011 and 2012, and identified them by PCR-RFLP of the ITS (internal transcribed spacer) of ribosomal DNA and the direct sequencing of the mitochondrial DNA cox2 gene.
