Background: Chest wall injury is common among trauma patients. Generally, patients with more medical problems tend to have worse outcomes with rib fractures. Our aim was to determine if surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) increases the likelihood of discharge to home.

Background: In addition to their convenience, ridesharing applications (apps) have the potential to offer a safer transportation alternative, especially in situations involving intoxication. Their use may lead to reductions in crash-related injuries and deaths, particularly due to alcohol-impaired driving. Several observational studies have aimed to assess the impact of ridesharing on alcohol-impaired driving, crashes, and deaths.

Background: Acute cholecystitis (AC) is among the most frequently encountered surgical problems. Current management typically includes laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Suboptimal outcomes of LC can include bile duct injury, open conversion (OC), and/or subtotal cholecystectomy (SC).

Creating a Chest Wall Injury and Reconstructive program: A single center experience with rib fractures.

Background: New Chest Wall Injury and Reconstructive Centers (CWIRC) are emerging; this study aims to investigate the potential benefits of implementing a CWIRC at a single institution. We hypothesized that patients treated at CWIRC will have improved outcomes.

Methods: We instituted a CWIRC in 2019 at our American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level One Trauma Center.

Purpose: The use of surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) has steadily increased over the past decade. Recent literature suggests that a larger population may benefit from SSRF, and that the geriatric population-as the highest-risk population-may receive the greatest improvement from these interventions. We sought to determine the overall utilization of SSRF in the United States.

ECMO after cardiac surgery: a single center study on survival and optimizing outcomes.

Background: The study purpose is to examine survival prognostic and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) application outcomes at our tertiary care center.

Methods: This is a retrospective analysis, January 2014 to September 2019. We analyzed 60 patients who underwent cardiac surgery and required peri-operative ECMO.

Application and outcomes of extracorporeal life support in emergency general surgery and trauma.

Background: We analyzed the use of Extracorporeal Membranous Oxygenation (ECMO) in acute care surgery patients at our Level-1 trauma center. We hypothesized that this patient population has improved ECMO outcomes.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of emergency general surgery and trauma patients placed on ECMO between the periods of October 2013 and February 2020.

Cytosolic chaperones mediate quality control of higher-order septin assembly in budding yeast.

Septin hetero-oligomers polymerize into cytoskeletal filaments with essential functions in many eukaryotic cell types. Mutations within the oligomerization interface that encompasses the GTP-binding pocket of a septin (its "G interface") cause thermoinstability of yeast septin hetero-oligomer assembly, and human disease. When coexpressed with its wild-type counterpart, a G interface mutant is excluded from septin filaments, even at moderate temperatures.

Identification of gustatory-olfactory flavor mixtures: effects of linguistic labeling.

Two experiments, using different ranges and numbers of stimuli, examined how linguistic labels affect the identification of flavor mixtures containing different proportions of sucrose (gustatory flavorant) and citral (olfactory flavorant). Both experiments asked subjects to identify each stimulus as having either "mostly sugar" or "mostly citrus." In one condition, no labels preceded the flavor stimuli.
