Background: Cost sharing, or the extent to which patients contribute to health care spending, has been linked to various outcomes. The relationship between cost sharing and acupuncture utilization is unclear.
Objectives: To measure the association between cost sharing (eg, copays, share of spending paid out of pocket, and consumer-driven health plans marked by high deductibles) and the use of in-network acupuncturists.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic induced a shift to telemedicine, which may have disproportionately affected in-person treatments such as acupuncture therapy.
Objectives: We measured trends in reimbursed acupuncture between 2018 and 2021. We also measured trends in other types of pain care among patients with low back pain (LBP), which was the most common diagnosis for acupuncture.

Background: Several clinical trials support the efficacy of Whole Systems Traditional Chinese Medicine (WS-TCM) modalities, including acupuncture, for improving outcomes among women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), but few studies have described its real-world integration within an academic medical setting or its immediate effects on pain, stress, and anxiety.
Objective: To characterize the clinical delivery of WS-TCM and assess its effects on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) among patients receiving WS-TCM while undergoing IVF.
Methods: A retrospective review of patients who received ≥1 WS-TCM treatment associated with ≥1 embryo transfer at a single center was conducted.

Background: The integrative medicine (IM) clinic is an innovative care model that may increase access to guideline-concordant nonpharmacologic treatment use in healthcare delivery systems for prevalent conditions such as low back pain (LBP).
Objective: To describe the use and effectiveness of IM services for LBP in IM clinics.
Research Design: Prospective cohort study.
Meditation training has been shown to improve physical and mental health and promote neural plasticity, but more research is needed on the relationships between these effects. This study analyzed the Resting State Functional Connectivity (RSFC) of posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) among 94 chronically stressed but otherwise healthy adults randomized 1:1:1 to receive eight weeks of in-person one-on-one interventions focused either on meditation (n = 32), yoga (n = 31), or stress education (n = 31). We found only in the meditation arm, there was a significant reduction of PCC RSFC with the left hippocampus (p < 0.

Our purpose was to conduct a multi-site prospective, practice-based, observational evaluation of patient reported outcomes in chronic pain patients.
Methods: This study took place at seventeen BraveNet Practice Based Research Network integrative medicine clinics.
Background: Pain plays a significant role in emergency department (ED) visits, however safe and effective nonpharmacologic options are needed. Prior studies of acupuncture in the ED reported pain reduction with minimal side effects, but most were small and single site.
Methods: We conducted ACUITY, a prospectively designed multi-center feasibility RCT.

Context: Reiki is a biofield therapy from Japan currently used in many US hospitals. Evidence supports Reiki's effectiveness for addressing cancer and treatment-related symptoms such as pain and anxiety. However, no study to date has assessed changes in nausea following Reiki received during infusion treatments or assessed patients from multiple healthcare locations.

Using qualitative research methods, a novel mind-body intervention called Intervention for Early Onset Type 2 Diabetes (INTEND) has been developed for AYA aged 15 to 20 years, with the goal of improving self-management and coping skills, by enhancing routine care with augmented education coupled with mind-body skills.
Method: Qualitative interviews with AYA 15 to 20 years of age with T2D, their parents, and professionals caring specifically for this population were done through a focus group model.

The use of electronic intake forms within the electronic health record (EHR) is an emerging method for routinely collecting patient-reported outcomes (PRO). However, few studies have evaluated experiences/perspectives toward electronic forms among outpatients receiving care within Integrative Health and Medicine (IHM) clinics. The study purpose was to understand patients' perspectives of electronic intake and PRO forms in the outpatient IHM setting.

Owing to perceived additional costs, patients may avoid integrative health and medicine (IHM) treatments, while insurers may not cover IHM. We hypothesized that adult beneficiaries of a health system's employee insurance plan with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions receiving covered outpatient IHM would have reduced total allowed costs over the 1-year follow-up compared with matched controls, secondarily exploring medical and pharmaceutical cost subsets. We queried medical records and claims spanning 2018-2023 for beneficiaries aged 18-89 years with a new MSK episode.

How acupuncture is used within pain care regimens for LBP has not been widely studied.
Objective: To document trends in reimbursed acupuncture between 2010 and 2019 among a large sample of patients with LBP, focusing on demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical characteristics associated with acupuncture use and the nonpharmacologic, pharmacologic, and interventional treatments used by patients who utilize acupuncture.
Background: Acupuncture shows promise as an effective nonpharmacologic option for reduction of acute pain in the emergency department (ED). Following CONSORT and STRICTA guidelines, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) generally report intervention details and acupoint options, but fidelity to acupuncture interventions, critical to reliability in intervention research, is rarely reported.
Methods: ACUITY is an NCCIH-funded, multi-site feasibility RCT of acupuncture in 3 EDs (Cleveland, Nashville, and San Diego).
Objective: To investigate the feasibility of pre- and post-encounter patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure collection within an outpatient integrative health and medicine (IHM) clinic and to characterize factors associated with successful completion.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 27,464 outpatient IHM encounters including 9,520 chiropractic; 8,237 acupuncture; 5,847 massage; 2,345 IHM consultation; and 1,515 osteopathic manipulation treatment encounters at four clinics offering IHM over 18 months. Patients were asked to complete paper questionnaires rating pain, anxiety, and stress from 0-10 immediately pre- and post-encounter.
Background: Patients seeking integrative health and medicine (IHM) modalities often present with multiple physical and psychological concerns. Research supports IHM's effectiveness for addressing symptoms over longer time periods. However, few studies have evaluated immediate outpatient effects.

Our objectives were to explore knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about acupuncture, identify health service needs and assess the perceived feasibility of weekly acupuncture visits among individuals with TBI.
Methods: We surveyed adults 18 years of age and older with TBI who received care at the University of Washington.
Objectives: Patients receiving chiropractic spinal manipulation (CSM) for low back pain (LBP) are less likely to receive any opioid prescription for subsequent pain management. However, the likelihood of specifically being prescribed tramadol, a less potent opioid, has not been explored. We hypothesised that adults receiving CSM for newly diagnosed radicular LBP would be less likely to receive a tramadol prescription over 1-year follow-up, compared with those receiving usual medical care.

Little is known about the applicability, utilization, and effectiveness of mind-body interventions (MBIs) for conditions that are not predominantly pain, neoplastic, or psychiatric, particularly in pediatric patients. This scoping review describes research pertaining to such interventions in youth with nonpain, noncancer, and nonpsychiatric predominant chronic medical conditions. Searches of EBSCO CINAHL, Elsevier Scopus, Ovid for MEDLINE, and Ovid PsycInfo were conducted to investigate MBIs in youth under 18 years of age with nonpain, noncancer, and nonpsychiatric predominant chronic medical conditions.

However, identifying if there is a potential causal effect is complicated by the heightened incidence of CES among those with low back pain (LBP). The study hypothesis was that there would be no increase in the risk of CES in adults with LBP following CSM compared to a propensity-matched cohort following physical therapy (PT) evaluation without spinal manipulation over a three-month follow-up period.

Background: Youth with sickle cell disease (SCD) face several challenges as they age, including increased pain frequency, duration, and interference. The purpose of this study was to (i) determine the feasibility of routine pain screening; (ii) identify and describe various clinical pain presentations; and (iii) understand preferences/resources related to engaging in integrative health and medicine (IHM) modalities within an outpatient pediatric SCD clinic.
Methods: During routine outpatient visits, patients aged 8-18 completed measures of pain frequency, duration, and chronic pain risk (Pediatric Pain Screening Tool [PPST]).
Early symptoms of vertebral artery dissection (VAD) may be nonspecific, including neck pain and headache. Neck pain and headache are also common reasons for patients to seek chiropractic care. We hypothesized that neck pain and/or headache would be the most prevalent symptoms among patients with undiagnosed VAD presenting to chiropractors compared to dizziness or other symptoms.

Methods: Using the 2019 National Health Interview Survey, we examined sociodemographic, pain, and mental health predictors of (1) the sum of IHM modalities (ie, chiropractic care, yoga/Tai Chi, massage, or meditation/guided imagery) used to manage pain and (2) exclusive engagement in nonpharmacologic pain management modalities (ie, IHM, a chronic pain self-management program, support groups, or physical, rehabilitative, occupational, or talk therapy) or opioids in the past 3 months.
Results: Metropolitan residency, higher family income, higher education levels, increased number of pain locations, and increased frequency of pain limiting life/work activities were associated with increased odds of IHM engagement.

Background: Patients who undergo lumbar discectomy may experience ongoing lumbosacral radiculopathy (LSR) and seek spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) to manage these symptoms. We hypothesized that adults receiving SMT for LSR at least one year following lumbar discectomy would be less likely to undergo lumbar spine reoperation compared to matched controls not receiving SMT, over two years' follow-up.
Methods: We searched a United States network of health records (TriNetX, Inc.
