The joint spatial distribution of two count outcomes (eg, counts of two diseases) is usually studied using a Poisson shared component model (P-SCM), which uses geographically structured latent variables to model spatial variations that are specific and shared by both outcomes. In this model, the correlation between the outcomes is assumed to be fully accounted for by the latent variables. However, in this article, we show that when the outcomes have an unknown number of cases in common, the bivariate counts exhibit a positive "residual" correlation, which the P-SCM wrongly attributes to the covariance of the latent variables, leading to biased inference and degraded predictive performance.

The implementation of sample pooling - a group testing strategy where multiple samples are combined into a pool and tested with a single analysis - was shown to be an effective strategy for both food companies and food safety authorities to strengthen the surveillance of food chemical safety. This paper aims to assess the benefit that would have a surveillance based on sample pooling for human health, using the exposure to meat Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) as a case study. It evaluates the exposure to non-dioxin-like (nDL-) PCB in pork meat in France by comparing sample pooling (18,275 tested carcasses) with current (731 tested carcasses) and systematic testing (23 million tested carcasses), along with two scenarios reflecting most plausible developments in the pork industry: Two-faced Sector scenario and Regional Magnet.

The French Moss Survey employs forest mosses as indicators to monitor the deposition of atmospheric substances, notably focusing on cadmium (Cd), a known carcinogenic and contributor to respiratory illnesses. This comprehensive study encompasses 55 variables to understand Cd accumulation in terrestrial mosses in France. These variables include moss species, tree cover, biogeographical markers, land use area, proximity to road and rail networks, soil concentration of Cd and atmospheric concentration and deposition of Cd using a physical model.
