An organocatalytic cascade reaction of 2-ethylidene 1,3-indandiones and isatylidene-malononitriles has been achieved using quinine as the catalyst. The unexpected vinylogous Michael addition at the β position of isatylidene-malononitriles, followed by aldol cyclization, 1,2-addition of alkoxide to nitrile, and [1,3]-O-to-N rearrangement, leads to the generation of unique spiro-bridged heterocyclic compounds containing amide, indanone, and oxindole moieties in good to excellent yields with high diastereoselectivity.

Objective: To assess the effect of transarterial embolization (TAE) for adhesive capsulitis (AC) by evaluating clinical outcomes and changes in inflammation using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide; therefore, there is an emerging need for novel experimental models that allow for the identification and validation of biomarkers for CRC-specific progression. In the present study, a repeated sphere-forming assay was used as a strategy to select a malignant subpopulation from a CRC cell line, namely HCT116. We reveal by high-throughput screening that activating transcription factor 1 (ATF1) is a novel pluripotent regulator in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). The knockdown of ATF1 expression significantly up-regulated neuroectoderm (NE) genes but not mesoderm, endoderm, and trophectoderm genes. Of note, down-regulation or knockout of ATF1 with short hairpin RNA (shRNA), small interfering RNA (siRNA), or clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) was sufficient to up-regulate sex-determining region Y-box (SOX)2 and paired box 6 (PAX6) expression under the undifferentiated or differentiated conditions, whereas overexpression of ATF1 suppressed NE differentiation.

An important safety concern in the use of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) is tumorigenic risk, because these cells can form teratomas after an in vivo injection at ectopic sites. Several thousands of undifferentiated hPSCs are sufficient to induce teratomas in a mouse model. Strong couplings between cavity modes in photonic molecules formed by two preselected nearly identical microdisk microcavities with embedded quantum dots are investigated. By continuously tuning the refractive index of one microdisk, clear anticrossings in the resonant peak energies associated with crossings in the peak linewidths can be observed. The coupling strengths are extracted by the coupled mode theory and analyzed by the model considering the effective potential confining the electromagnetic waves in the microcavities.

We report on the diamagnetic responses of different exciton complexes in single InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) and quantum rings (QRs). For QDs, the imbalanced magnetic responses of inter-particle Coulomb interactions play a crucial role in the diamagnetic shifts of excitons (X), biexcitons (XX), and positive trions (X-). For negative trions (X-) in QDs, anomalous magnetic responses are observed, which cannot be described by the conventional quadratic energy shift with the magnetic field.

Oct4 and Nanog are two embryonic stem (ES) cell-specific transcription factors that play critical roles in the maintenance of ES cell pluripotency. In this study, we investigated the effects of Oct4 and Nanog expression on the differentiation state of myogenic cells, which is sustained by a strong positive feedback loop. Oct4 and Nanog, either independently or simultaneously, were overexpressed in C2C12 myoblasts, and the expression of myogenic lineage-specific genes and terminal differentiation was observed by RT-PCR.

We report measurements of diamagnetic shifts for different exciton complexes confined in small InAs quantum dots. The measured diamagnetic responses are sensitive to the number of carriers in the exciton complexes, with systematic differences between neutral excitons, biexcitons, and trions. Theoretical calculations suggest that such systematic differences arise from very different extents of electron and hole wave functions confined in small quantum dots.

In this work, we present a parametric study on the low temperature synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) CVD system using dry bi-layered catalytic thin-films (Fe/Al and Ni/Al, deposited by electron-beam evaporation method) as the catalysts. With a low substrate temperature of 550 degrees C and above, SWNTs were successfully synthesized on both catalysts, as revealed from the characteristic peaks of SWNTs in the micro-Raman spectra. By the reduction of plasma power and the shortening of the process times, the lowest synthesis temperature of SWNTs achieved in our system was approached to 500 degrees C on Ni/Al catalysts; on the other hands, the lowest temperature for Fe/Al catalysts was 550 degrees C.
