Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) negative pulmonary limited-form granulomatous with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare type of GPA. A 53-year-old female had been followed as the possible pulmonary infarction of bilateral lungs for 4 years without any therapy. The options for lung cancer treatment have increased due to the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors, but there has been no report of inoperable cases whereby the treatment effects rendered the case operable, an operation was subsequently performed, and histological assessment of the surgical specimen was carried out. Here, we report a 67-year-old man who was given pembrolizumab for T3N0 lung squamous cell carcinoma suspected of pericardial infiltration and judged inoperable. Treatment effect was evaluated after four courses.

To address the role of transforming growth factor (TGF) beta in the progression of established tumors while avoiding the confounding inhibitory effects of TGF-beta on early transformation, we generated doxycycline (DOX)-inducible triple transgenic mice in which active TGF-beta1 expression could be conditionally regulated in mouse mammary tumor cells transformed by the polyomavirus middle T antigen. DOX-mediated induction of TGF-beta1 for as little as 2 weeks increased lung metastases >10-fold without a detectable effect on primary tumor cell proliferation or tumor size. DOX-induced active TGF-beta1 protein and nuclear Smad2 were restricted to cancer cells, suggesting a causal association between autocrine TGF-beta and increased metastases.

It has been reported that overexpression of the epidermal growth factor receptor (erbB1) or its homologous receptor, HER2 (erbB2), can confer antiestrogen resistance to estrogen receptor (ER)-positive human breast cancer cells. Aberrant signaling by receptors of the erbB network up-regulates a number of signaling pathways, which include phospholipase C-gamma1, Ras-Raf-mitogen-activated protein/extracellular signal-regulated kinase kinase-mitogen-activated protein kinase, phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase and its target, the serine/threonine kinase Akt, stress-activated protein kinases, signal transducers and activators of transcription, and c-Jun-NH(2)-terminal kinase (JNK). Akt has been reported to induce estrogen-independent transcription of ER.

Vinorelbine (Navelbine, KW-2307), a semisynthetic vinca alkaloid, is a potent inhibitor of mitotic microtubule polymerization. The aims of this study were to demonstrate vinorelbine-induced radiosensitization of human small cell lung cancer (SCLC) SBC-3 cells and to elucidate the mechanisms of radiosensitization. A clonogenic assay demonstrated that SBC-3 cells were sensitized to radiation by vinorelbine using different schedules combining exposure to both.
