A diagnosis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is critical importance in forensic medicine, particularly because severe atherosclerosis is known to be associated with a high risk of sudden death. In South Korea, the assessment of coronary atherosclerosis during autopsy largely depends on the forensic pathologist's visual measurements, which may limit diagnostic accuracy. The objective of this study was to develop a deep learning algorithm for rapid and precise assessment of coronary atherosclerosis and to identify factors influencing the model's prediction of atherosclerosis severity.

Introduction: The prognostic significance of nodal micrometastasis and isolated tumor cells (ITC) in urinary bladder cancer (UBC) is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence, clinical impact, and clinicopathological characteristics of nodal micrometastasis and ITC in UBC.

Materials And Methods: A total of 124 patients with UBC undergoing surgery were investigated.

Calcium chloride, which is commonly used in de-icing agents and desiccants, is known for the potential harm it can cause through skin contact, oral ingestion, or intravenous administration. The current paper reports on an autopsy case of a 68-year-old woman who died after ingesting an unknown substance. Histopathological examination revealed coagulative necrosis in the esophagus and ionized blood calcium levels that were significantly higher than normal.

This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the London Atlas for age estimation in the Korean population by comparing with Lee's and Willems' methods. Dental ages of 475 orthopantomographs from Korean individuals aged 4-15 years (mean 10.32 ± 3.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how dental characteristics from treatments can help estimate age non-invasively using panoramic radiographs of 420 subjects aged 20-89.
  • A correlation was found between the number of specific dental features and age, leading to the development of eleven regression models, with one showing a root mean square error of 14.78 years.
  • The findings suggest that certain dental traits are statistically linked to age, indicating potential applications in forensic science and guiding future research.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the distribution and levels of catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine) in postmortem samples to understand their relationship with agony time and causes of death.
  • A total of 114 autopsy cases were analyzed, revealing significant relationships in catecholamine levels in blood but no notable differences based on sex, age, or manner of death; however, CPR and epinephrine injections noticeably influenced catecholamine levels.
  • Findings showed that longer agony times were associated with increased levels of dopamine in femoral and heart blood, while urine catecholamine levels were affected by the postmortem interval.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of different criteria (Demirjian, Köhler, Liversidge, Thevissen) for estimating age through third molar maturity in Koreans aged 15-23, using 900 panoramic radiographs.
  • The Demirjian standard showed the best accuracy with the lowest error margin and highest adjusted values compared to the others, making it a strong choice for age estimation.
  • All four criteria proved suitable, but the Demirjian and Liversidge standards were recommended due to their better reflection of developmental patterns, with a call for further research across different populations.

Hydrofluoric acid (HF), the inorganic acid of elemental fluorine, is a highly dangerous substance and death can result from a very small exposure. In addition to local toxicity, HF can trigger fatal systemic reactions by its high affinity for calcium and magnesium. The authors report the autopsy case of a male worker who was exposed to 50% HF while repairing the leakage from an HF tank valve in a semi-conductor washing factory.

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare neuroendocrine tumor of parafollicular C cells. The majority of MTCs occur sporadically, but about 30% of the cases are associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) syndrome or familial MTC. Generally, MTCs have no clinical manifestation, but infrequently the patients develop symptoms of hypercortisolism by secreting adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) or corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH).
