Importance: The long-term effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication programs for preventing gastric cancer will depend on recurrence risk and individual and community factors.

Fibular stress fracture in a high school athlete.

The patient was a 15-year-old adolescent male who was referred to a physical therapist for a chief complaint of bilateral posterolateral lower-leg pain, which was worse in the right lower extremity than in the left. Due to findings that were concerning for a stress fracture, the patient was referred to a pediatric sports medicine physician. Subsequent radiographs revealed findings that were concerning for a stress fracture along the medial aspect of the midshaft of the right fibula.

Acyl-homoserine lactone-mediated quorum sensing (QS) regulates diverse activities in many species of Proteobacteria. QS-controlled genes commonly code for production of secreted or excreted public goods. The acyl-homoserine lactones are synthesized by members of the LuxI signal synthase family and are detected by cognate members of the LuxR family of transcriptional regulators.

Bacterial quorum sensing and metabolic incentives to cooperate.

The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa uses a cell-cell communication system termed "quorum sensing" to control production of public goods, extracellular products that can be used by any community member. Not all individuals respond to quorum-sensing signals and synthesize public goods. Such social cheaters enjoy the benefits of the products secreted by cooperators.

The single-nucleotide resolution transcriptome of Pseudomonas aeruginosa grown in body temperature.

One of the hallmarks of opportunistic pathogens is their ability to adjust and respond to a wide range of environmental and host-associated conditions. The human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa has an ability to thrive in a variety of hosts and cause a range of acute and chronic infections in individuals with impaired host defenses or cystic fibrosis. Here we report an in-depth transcriptional profiling of this organism when grown at host-related temperatures.

Strain-dependent diversity in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum-sensing regulon.

Acyl-homoserine lactones serve as quorum-sensing signals for many Proteobacteria, and acyl-homoserine lactone signaling is known to control cooperative activities. Antisense RNA that affects Rhodopseudomonas palustris quorum-sensing signal receptor expression.

Quorum sensing in the bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris involves the RpaI signal synthase, which produces p-coumaroyl-homoserine lactone (pC-HSL) and RpaR, which is a pC-HSL-dependent transcriptional activator. There is also an antisense rpaR transcript (asrpaR) of unknown function. Recent RNAseq studies have revealed that bacterial antisense RNAs are abundant, but little is known about the function of these molecules.

Role of CT perfusion imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of vasospasm.

The current role of CT perfusion (CTP) imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of vasospasm in the setting of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is discussed in this article, with specific attention directed towards defining the terminology of vasospasm and delayed cerebral ischemia. A commonly used CTP technique in clinical practice is described. A review of the literature regarding the usefulness of CTP for the diagnosis of vasospasm and its role in guiding treatment are discussed.

Acyl-homoserine lactone-dependent eavesdropping promotes competition in a laboratory co-culture model.

Many Proteobacteria use acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated quorum sensing to activate the production of antibiotics at high cell density. Extracellular factors like antibiotics can be considered public goods shared by individuals within a group. Quorum-sensing control of antibiotic production may be important for protecting a niche or competing for limited resources in mixed bacterial communities.

Balloon-assisted coil embolization of intracranial aneurysms is not associated with increased periprocedural complications.

Background: The balloon-assisted coil embolization (BACE) technique represents an effective tool for the treatment of complex wide-necked intracranial aneurysms; however, its safety is a matter of debate. This study presents the authors' institutional experience regarding the safety of the BACE technique.

Methods: 428 consecutive patients with 491 intracranial aneurysms (274 acutely ruptured and 217 unruptured) treated with conventional coil embolization (CCE) or with BACE were retrospectively reviewed.

Epigenetics of estrogen receptor-negative primary breast cancer.

Increasingly, breast cancer is being recognized as a heterogeneous disease comprised of molecularly and phenotypically distinct intrinsic tumor subtypes with different clinical outcomes. This biological heterogeneity has significant implications, particularly as it relates to expression profiling of estrogen receptor (ER) status, as classifying breast cancers based on hormone receptor expression impacts not only prognosis but also treatment options and long-term outcomes. Epigenetics has emerged as a promising field for the assessment of hormone receptor status.

Intraprocedural aneurysmal rupture during coil embolization of brain aneurysms: role of balloon-assisted coiling.

Background And Purpose: Intraprocedural aneurysmal rupture is a feared complication of coil embolization of intracranial aneurysms and is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. We report the incidence, endovascular management, and clinical outcome of patients with IAR, with emphasis on the role of the balloon-assisted technique.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all intracranial aneurysms treated by coil embolization between September 2001 and June 2011.

Background: The management of the pediatric patient with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture is evolving towards earlier reconstruction. A model for personalized in vivo analysis of human immune responsiveness.

Studies of human immune diseases are generally limited to the analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes of heterogeneous patient populations. Improved models are needed to allow analysis of fundamental immunologic abnormalities predisposing to disease and in which to assess immunotherapies. Immunodeficient mice receiving human fetal thymus grafts and fetal CD34(+) cells intravenously produce robust human immune systems, allowing analysis of human T cell development and function.

Anaerobic p-coumarate degradation by Rhodopseudomonas palustris and identification of CouR, a MarR repressor protein that binds p-coumaroyl coenzyme A.

The phenylpropanoid p-coumarate and structurally related aromatic compounds are produced in large amounts by green plants and are excellent carbon sources for many soil bacteria. Aerobic bacteria remove the acyl side chain from phenylpropanoids to leave an aromatic aldehyde, which then enters one of several possible central pathways of benzene ring degradation. We investigated the pathway for the anaerobic degradation of p-coumarate by the phototrophic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris and found that it also follows this metabolic logic.

Methods: The database of the Department of Neurological Rehabilitation C at Loewenstein Rehabilitation Center was used to investigate first ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients admitted for hospital rehabilitation over a 15 year period, January 1993 to December 2008.
