Introduction: The undeniable benefits of irradiating examinations such as computed tomography (CT) scans should not overshadow their potential harmful effects, particularly late risks. Hence, it is important to justify CT scans requested for patients. The aim of this study is to analyse the justification for CT scans in all health facilities with a functional medical scanner in Togo.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates radiation exposure levels in medical imaging facilities in Benin, focusing on X-ray and CT scan rooms, due to increasing occupational doses from expanded radiological procedures.
  • It involved 72 medical centers and used calibrated radiometers to measure exposure levels, comparing the results against established reference levels for both workers (7.50 µSv/h) and the public (0.05 µSv/h).
  • Findings revealed that 13.04% of the control areas behind lead glass exceeded occupational limits, and 40% of entrance doses were above public safety standards, indicating potential safety concerns in the current protective measures.

Dosimetric monitoring is useful to limit exposures to ionising radiation in medical occupational settings, and reduce subsequent health risks. Scientific literatures, such as the UNSCEAR report 2017 and International Atomic Energy Agency Report 2014b, updated information on this subject; however, few African works have been found. This is the reason why we undertook this study, which summarises existing information on monitoring external radiation exposure doses for the whole body, using data from medical workers on this continent.
