Background: One-fifth of patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) have bilateral symptoms. Performing bilateral hip arthroscopy on the same day minimizes the overall rehabilitation period compared with staged bilateral surgery, but most studies of outcomes from simultaneous surgery are in small cohorts.

Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose was to compare clinical outcome and revision rates between patients undergoing simultaneous bilateral, staged bilateral, and unilateral arthroscopic surgery for FAI from a large single-surgeon cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on hip microinstability, a condition that's tough to diagnose due to a lack of clear criteria, and aims to evaluate the prevalence and accuracy of various imaging findings using X-rays and MRIs.
  • Researchers compared imaging results from 224 hips (112 with microinstability and 112 without) that had undergone arthroscopic surgery, assessing different morphological features that might indicate microinstability.
  • Four significant predictors for microinstability were identified: labral hyperplasia and a decreased lateral center edge angle on MRI, along with the absence of specific signs on X-rays; however, many other imaging parameters previously thought to be related were not actually associated with the condition.

BACKGROUND Calcific tendinitis of the hip is rare but most commonly occurs in the gluteus medius. It occurs more frequently in women, usually between the ages of 40 and 70 years. Calcific tendinitis of the gluteus medius is associated with pain and tenderness in the greater trochanter region, can be acute or chronic, and should be distinguished from other differential diagnoses, such as trochanteric bursitis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated whether adding platelet-rich plasma (PRP) during hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) improves patient outcomes compared to a saline placebo.
  • - Conducted on patients aged 16 to 50 years, the trial randomly assigned 113 participants to receive either PRP or placebo before surgery, assessing their recovery using the International Hip Outcome Tool at various follow-up points.
  • - Results showed both groups had improved hip scores after 2 years, but there was no significant difference in their recovery, indicating that PRP may not provide additional benefits for FAI surgery.

Computed tomography (CT) scans with 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction are the gold standard of imaging for complex fractures. However, visualising CT imaging can be challenging. With increasing access to 3D printing, we postulate that life-sized 3D models can better assist in visualising CT images, aiding preoperative planning of tibial plafond fractures.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study used an online survey to evaluate residents' understanding, finding that overall knowledge was poor, with junior residents performing better in healthcare schemes and senior residents better at estimating implant costs.
  • * It is recommended that education on implant costs and healthcare schemes be included in residency programs to develop more informed and cost-effective future clinicians.

Background: Internal fixation modalities of unstable (>50 percent articular involvement) middle phalangeal volar lip fracture-dislocations include interfragmentary screw and volar buttress plating. This study investigates the mechanical properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and stiffness) of interfragmentary screw (IS), simple buttress plating (BP) and buttress plating with subchondral screw (BP+S).

Methods: Fifteen cadaveric digits (5 index, 5 middle, and 5 ring) were prepared by excising its skin envelope and flexor tendons while preserving the structures around the proximal interphalangeal joint.
