(1) Background: Heart failure (HF) and dementia are commonly associated with the elderly. A significant percentage of patients with HF are at high risk of cognitive decline and progression to dementia. Cognitive impairment is associated with both diseases.

Rare coexistence of large vessel vasculitis and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis: a case report.

Large-vessel vasculitis (LVV) is an inflammatory condition affecting large arteries, often leading to complications such as vessel occlusion or aneurysm. Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE), although rare, is generally linked with hypercoagulable states and malignancies, characterized by sterile vegetations on undamaged cardiac valves. We present a unique case of a 61-year-old woman with coexisting LVV and NBTE, evidenced by echocardiographic findings of vegetations on the aortic and mitral valves.

A Comprehensive Study on the Physicochemical Characterisation of Plant-Based By-Products.

The rapid growth of the global population has led to significant environmental impacts, driven by the unsustainable extraction of resources and waste generation. To address these challenges, the valorisation of by-products from different industries is crucial for maximising resource efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable practices. In this study, a comprehensive characterisation of the physicochemical properties of plant-based by-products, including rice husk (RH), oregano stalks (OS), eucalyptus leaves (EL), and almond shells (AS), was conducted.

Efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided needle muscle biopsy in the diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

Objectives: We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided needle muscle biopsy (UGNMB) using a 14G biopsy needle in obtaining adequate samples for histological analysis and establishing an inflammatory idiopathic myopathy (IIM) diagnosis in patients with suspected myositis.

Methods: We included patients who were followed up at our Rheumatology Department with a suspected IIM diagnosis. UGNMBs were performed from January 2022 to April 2024.

Rationale: People living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) benefit from regular physical activity (PA) to reduce cardiovascular risk and better manage comorbidities. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) depletion is an early event following excitotoxicity in many in vitro and in vivo excitotoxic-related models and contributes to the deregulation of energy homeostasis. Implementation of COVID-19 vaccination services in prison in six European countries: translating emergency intervention into routine life-course vaccination.

Background: Evidence has shown that the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is much higher in prisons than in the community. The release of the COVID-19 vaccine and the recommendation by WHO to include prisons among priority settings have led to the inclusion of prisons in national COVID-19 vaccination strategies. Evidence on prison health and healthcare services provision is limited and often focuses on a single country or institution due to the multiple challenges of conducting research in prison settings.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted resorting to data from a cancer registry to identify adult women with HR+/HER- advanced breast cancer exposed to aromatase inhibitors or fulvestrant (31 May 2017-31 March 2019) at the main oncology hospital in Portugal.

Primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma: case report.

Primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma is an extremely rare entity with an unknown etiopathology, and prognosis is generally poor. While diagnostic criteria are standardized, the optimal treatment strategy is not defined due to its rarity. In this article, we present a case of primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma, discussing its approach and treatment.

In this work, we studied the backfat transcriptome of surgically castrated (C), intact (I) and intact fed an experimental diet (IE) outdoor-reared male Alentejano (AL) pigs. The experimental diet was a high-fiber diet with locally produced legumes and by-products associated with a boar taint reduction effect. At slaughter (~160 kg), backfat samples were collected for total RNA sequencing.

Factors associated with non-invasive positive pressure ventilation failure in a COVID-19 intermediate care unit.

Background: The use of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) in COVID-19 patients with hypoxaemia is still under debate. The aim was to evaluate the efficacy of NIPPV (CPAP, HELMET-CPAP or NIV) in COVID-19 patients treated in the dedicated COVID-19 Intermediate Care Unit of Coimbra Hospital and University Centre, Portugal, and to assess factors associated with NIPPV failure.

Methods: Patients admitted from December 1st 2020 to February 28th 2021, treated with NIPPV due to COVID-19 were included.

Introduction: Regarding male breast cancer, a rare disease comprising ∼1% of breast cancers, data are generally scant. The present study aimed to quantify the imaging detected breast cancer in male gender corpses, determining in this way the prevalence of silent breast cancer in male gender.

Methodology: The population target has been male corpses without clinical expression of breast cancer.

Apart from their high nutritional value, these seaweeds are also a well-known reservoir of multiple bioactive compounds with great industrial interest.

Anxiety in heart failure patients and its association with socio-demographic and clinical characteristics: a cross-sectional study.

Unlabelled: Anxiety is one of the most frequent psychiatric disorders in heart failure (HF) patients. However, it is often neglected in clinical practice and studies about the particular relationship with the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classes for HF are scarce. In this context, this study aims to analyze the presence of anxiety symptoms in HF outpatients and also its association with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of these patients.
