(1) Background: Heart failure (HF) and dementia are commonly associated with the elderly. A significant percentage of patients with HF are at high risk of cognitive decline and progression to dementia. Cognitive impairment is associated with both diseases.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLarge-vessel vasculitis (LVV) is an inflammatory condition affecting large arteries, often leading to complications such as vessel occlusion or aneurysm. Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE), although rare, is generally linked with hypercoagulable states and malignancies, characterized by sterile vegetations on undamaged cardiac valves. We present a unique case of a 61-year-old woman with coexisting LVV and NBTE, evidenced by echocardiographic findings of vegetations on the aortic and mitral valves.

The rapid growth of the global population has led to significant environmental impacts, driven by the unsustainable extraction of resources and waste generation. To address these challenges, the valorisation of by-products from different industries is crucial for maximising resource efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable practices. In this study, a comprehensive characterisation of the physicochemical properties of plant-based by-products, including rice husk (RH), oregano stalks (OS), eucalyptus leaves (EL), and almond shells (AS), was conducted.

Objectives: We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided needle muscle biopsy (UGNMB) using a 14G biopsy needle in obtaining adequate samples for histological analysis and establishing an inflammatory idiopathic myopathy (IIM) diagnosis in patients with suspected myositis.
Methods: We included patients who were followed up at our Rheumatology Department with a suspected IIM diagnosis. UGNMBs were performed from January 2022 to April 2024.
Rationale: People living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) benefit from regular physical activity (PA) to reduce cardiovascular risk and better manage comorbidities. Pharmacists can provide support to increase physical activity by leveraging the regular interactions on their daily community pharmacy practice.
Aims And Objectives: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of people living T2D about their engagement in PA using pharmacies as the subject of interest to collect this information.
Excitotoxicity is a pathological process that occurs in many neurological diseases, such as stroke or epilepsy, and is characterized by the extracellular accumulation of high concentrations of glutamate or other excitatory amino acids (EAAs). Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) depletion is an early event following excitotoxicity in many in vitro and in vivo excitotoxic-related models and contributes to the deregulation of energy homeostasis. However, the interplay between glutamate excitotoxicity and the NAD biosynthetic pathway is not fully understood.

We analyzed data from high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to assess associations with autoantibody profiles and treatment regimens.

Intracellular sensing technologies necessitate a delicate balance of spatial resolution, sensitivity, biocompatibility, and stability. While existing methods partially fulfill these criteria, none offer a comprehensive solution. Nanodiamonds (NDs) harboring nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers have emerged as promising candidates due to their sensing capabilities under biological conditions and their ability to meet all aforementioned requirements.

Community pharmacists are an accessible source to provide brief advice to people on how to be more physically active. Nonetheless, there is a limited understanding of stakeholders' perspectives on their role in promoting physical activity, to inform policy and practice.

The release of the COVID-19 vaccine and the recommendation by WHO to include prisons among priority settings have led to the inclusion of prisons in national COVID-19 vaccination strategies. Evidence on prison health and healthcare services provision is limited and often focuses on a single country or institution due to the multiple challenges of conducting research in prison settings.

Objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant impact on the management of non-COVID-19 related diseases, potentially increasing the incidence of paraneoplastic syndromes such as cancer-associated myositis (CAM).The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of CAM in our cohort before and after the COVID-19 pandemic onset.
Methods: We included patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM), diagnosed between June 2016 and June 2023.
Seizures are the most common neurological disorder in pediatrics, and their initial approach aims at clinical stabilization. A thorough patient evaluation may provide important clues for the etiological diagnosis. A 12-month-old female child was observed in the emergency department after experiencing her first apyretic seizure.

In particular, dietary nitrate has been increasingly explored as a strategy to modulate different physiological mechanisms with demonstrated benefits in multiple organs, including gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, metabolic, and endocrine systems. An intriguing exception in this scenario has been the brain, for which the evidence of the nitrate benefits remains controversial.

Effectiveness data is essential for regulatory action, but little is known about real-world use of aromatase inhibitors and fulvestrant.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted resorting to data from a cancer registry to identify adult women with HR+/HER- advanced breast cancer exposed to aromatase inhibitors or fulvestrant (31 May 2017-31 March 2019) at the main oncology hospital in Portugal.
Primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma is an extremely rare entity with an unknown etiopathology, and prognosis is generally poor. While diagnostic criteria are standardized, the optimal treatment strategy is not defined due to its rarity. In this article, we present a case of primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma, discussing its approach and treatment.

Three groups of male Alentejano pigs ( = 10 each) were raised between ~40 and 160 kg LW. Group C included pigs that were surgically castrated, while the I group included intact ones; both were fed with commercial diets.

These pigs were divided into three groups and fed . From ~40 to 130 kg LW, castrated (C group) and intact animals (I and IExp) consumed commercial diets.

The experimental diet was a high-fiber diet with locally produced legumes and by-products associated with a boar taint reduction effect. At slaughter (~160 kg), backfat samples were collected for total RNA sequencing.

The aim was to evaluate the efficacy of NIPPV (CPAP, HELMET-CPAP or NIV) in COVID-19 patients treated in the dedicated COVID-19 Intermediate Care Unit of Coimbra Hospital and University Centre, Portugal, and to assess factors associated with NIPPV failure.
Methods: Patients admitted from December 1st 2020 to February 28th 2021, treated with NIPPV due to COVID-19 were included.
Introduction: Regarding male breast cancer, a rare disease comprising ∼1% of breast cancers, data are generally scant. The present study aimed to quantify the imaging detected breast cancer in male gender corpses, determining in this way the prevalence of silent breast cancer in male gender.
Methodology: The population target has been male corpses without clinical expression of breast cancer.
Fucales are an order within the Phaeophyceae that include most of the common littoral seaweeds in temperate and subtropical coastal regions. Many species of this order have long been a part of human culture with applications as food, feedand remedies in folk medicine. Apart from their high nutritional value, these seaweeds are also a well-known reservoir of multiple bioactive compounds with great industrial interest.

However, it is often neglected in clinical practice and studies about the particular relationship with the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classes for HF are scarce. In this context, this study aims to analyze the presence of anxiety symptoms in HF outpatients and also its association with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of these patients.
