Objectives: The aim of the present study was to test whether the occurrence of psychosomatic syndromes in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) may influence psychopathological distress and well-being.

Methods: A total of 276 outpatients with SSc were consecutively enrolled. Mental disorders were assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), while psychosomatic syndromes were assessed using the Semi-Structured Interview for Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research-Revised (DCPR-R-SSI).

Background: The care trajectory for patients with Persistent Somatic Symptoms (PSS) is complex due to variability in diagnoses and treatments, with differences across European healthcare systems. Existing findings predominantly come from individual Western European countries, and comparative studies are lacking. This study aimed to explore how healthcare systems are perceived to influence PSS courses across four European countries and how professionals view their respective systems regarding PSS.

Background: The assessment of psychological well-being has been largely neglected in clinical settings, particularly in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), where the focus of clinical attention was mainly on symptoms. This is the first study in which the validity, reliability, and sensibility of two patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of psychological well-being, the five-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5) and the six-item version of the Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWB-6), have been tested according to clinimetric criteria to determine their current and potential clinical applications in SSc patients.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 219 patients with a diagnosis of SSc.

Background: In recent years, the palliative care (PC) paradigm is evolving from a prognosis-based approach to one centered on complexity, also in response to the aging population and the increase in chronic diseases. It is therefore necessary to strengthen PC networks with effective management of the specialist resources available. The use of tools such as the spanish Diagnostic Instrument for Complexity in Palliative Care (IDC-Pal) can help evaluate the complexity of PC needs, thus guiding the clinical care response.

Chronic pain (CP) is a multifaceted and severely disabling persistent condition that affects individuals worldwide. A synthesis of epidemiological data is still lacking. The present systematic review aims at presenting point, period, and lifetime prevalence estimates of CP in the European adult population, as well as relevant features associated with it.

Despite the importance of the second victim phenomenon for healthcare systems, there is limited research on Italian healthcare providers. We assessed emotional distress in individuals impacted by an adverse event using the Withstand-PSY Questionnaire (WS-PSY-Q). Additionally, we aimed to identify potential risk factors for anxiety and depression.

Background: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at 77.5 Hz and 15 mA, targeting the forehead and mastoid areas, has proven efficacious in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) by simultaneously stimulating multiple brain nuclei and regions, many of which are critical for blood pressure regulation. This post hoc analysis aimed to assess the potential blood pressure-lowering effects of 77.

Introduction: The Mental Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) was developed using a clinimetric approach to bring together the key features of mental pain into a single, brief, transdiagnostic scale. The present study aims at extending the validation of the MPQ to people from three different clinical settings.

Methods: A multicentre, cross-sectional study on adults diagnosed with migraine (n = 256), systemic sclerosis (n = 219), or mental disorders (n = 138) was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the use of Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (DCPR) to identify and classify psychosomatic syndromes not fully covered by existing diagnostic systems.
  • A nationwide survey involving over 6,600 patients revealed that alexithymia, irritable mood, and demoralization were the most common psychosomatic conditions, especially in those with fibromyalgia.
  • Results indicated that factors like high anxiety, abnormal illness behavior, and poor well-being are linked to DCPR diagnoses, suggesting a need for broader implementation of DCPR in clinical practice for better patient management.*

Well-being therapy (WBT) is a short-term psychotherapeutic strategy, based on the technique of self-observation via the use of a structured diary and the guide of a therapist, with the goal of increasing psychological well-being, thus reaching euthymia and a balance among psychic forces. WBT showed to be suitable for application in residual symptoms of unipolar and bipolar depression, since the sequential combination with cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) led to a decrease in the relapse rate of recurrent depression. WBT also showed clinical utility in the treatment of cyclothymia, which represents one of the stages of bipolar disorder.

Objective: The aim of this review is to illustrate an innovative framework for assessing the psychosocial aspects of medical disorders within the biopsychosocial model.
