The European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Task Forces (TFs) on Quality of Life (QoL) and Patient Oriented Outcomes and on Autoimmune Bullous Diseases (AIBD) collaborated on a position statement regarding the QoL instruments that could better evaluate the health-related (HR)QoL in different phases of the course of these chronic diseases. Position statements were formed and accepted by voting of all authors. The ability to use a measure that has a validated system to interpret scores and has a known minimal clinical important difference (MCID), such as the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), is an important aspect when choosing which HRQoL instrument to use.

Contact allergy (CA) is not uncommon in the population, including to various fragrance allergens. If not diagnosed correctly, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) may ensue, because targeted allergen avoidance is not possible. The primary objective of the study is to estimate the prevalence of CA to seven fragrance materials in patients with suspected ACD across Europe.

The emergence of systemic therapies and photoprotection against non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) raises questions on the broader systematic impact of the disease. Personalized medicine involves a holistic patient approach, through which the evaluation of systemic biomarkers can reveal the interconnected aspects of patient health and tailored therapies. Cumulative UV exposure disrupts redox equilibrium and triggers inflammation and cutaneous immunosuppression, processes that contribute independently or via their interplay to cutaneous carcinogenesis.

In this paper, the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Task Force on Quality of Life (QoL) and Patient-Oriented Outcomes presents its position statements on health-related (HR) QoL assessment in epidermolysis bullosa (EB). The EADV TF on QoL and Patient-Oriented Outcomes recommends the use of the EB-specific instrument QOLEB in patients over the age of 10 years and, in addition to the QOLEB, the use of iscorEB-p in moderate-to-severe EB; the IntoDermQoL proxy instrument with its EB-specific module should be used in children aged under 5 years. The EB-specific instrument iscorEB-p, and the dermatology-specific instrument CDLQI may measure HRQoL in children with EB aged from 5 to 10 years.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on a coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) known for its ability to cause severe skin infections, as assessed in patients at a hospital in Greece over a decade.
  • A total of 123 skin specimens reflecting the diversity of infections were analyzed, with hidradenitis suppurativa being the most frequent condition, and many cases also presenting co-infections.
  • The majority of patients received effective systemic antibiotic treatments, leading to a 100% cure rate, though some notable antibiotic resistance was found against penicillin and clindamycin.

Article Synopsis
  • The EADV Task Forces analyzed the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) measurement in urticaria treatment, highlighting the Dermatology Life Quality Index as the most commonly used tool in clinical trials.
  • Many trials lacked specific numeric results on HRQoL changes, complicating comparisons and conclusions across studies.
  • The study suggests favoring HRQoL instruments that include minimal clinically significant difference (MCID) data for better relevance in clinical practice rather than just relying on statistically significant changes.

Tinea incognito is a dermatophyte infection with atypical features, due to the use of topical or systemic steroids or other immunosuppressive medications. Delayed diagnosis, spread of the infection to critical body surfaces, resistance to antifungal drugs, and increased costs due to prolonged hospitalization and multiple treatment regimens often complicate tinea incognito. It can affect individuals of all ages and genders, but it is more common in children.

To investigate the incidence and prognostically significant correlations and cooperations of LKB1 loss of expression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), surgical specimens from 188 metastatic and 60 non-metastatic operable stage I-IIIA NSCLC patients were analyzed to evaluate their expression of LKB1 and pAMPK proteins in relation to various processes. The investigated factors included antitumor immunity response regulators STING and PD-L1; pro-angiogenic, EMT and cell cycle targets, as well as metastasis-related (VEGFC, PDGFRα, PDGFRβ, p53, p16, Cyclin D1, ZEB1, CD24) targets; and cell adhesion (β-catenin) molecules. The protein expression levels were evaluated via immunohistochemistry; the RNA levels of LKB1 and NEDD9 were evaluated via PCR, while KRAS exon 2 and BRAF mutations were evaluated by Sanger sequencing.
