Beginning in early 2021, unique and highly divergent lineages of SARS-CoV-2 were sporadically found in wastewater sewersheds using a sequencing strategy focused on amplifying the most rapidly evolving region of SARS-CoV-2, the receptor binding domain (RBD). Because these RBD sequences did not match known circulating strains and their source was not known, we termed them "cryptic lineages". To date, more than 20 cryptic lineages have been identified using the RBD-focused sequencing strategy.

The TAL1 oncogene driving T cell lymphoblastic leukemia is frequently activated through mutated cis-regulatory elements, whereby small insertions or deletions (indels) create a binding site for the transcription factor MYB. In the United States, SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance initially relied almost entirely on residual diagnostic specimens from nucleic acid amplification-based tests. However, use of those tests waned after the end of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency on May 11, 2023. Toxic metal pollution is ubiquitous in soils, yet its worldwide distribution is unknown. We analyzed a global database of soil pollution by arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, nickel, and lead at 796,084 sampling points from 1493 regional studies and used machine learning techniques to map areas with exceedance of agricultural and human health thresholds. We reveal a previously unrecognized high-risk, metal-enriched zone in low-latitude Eurasia, which is attributed to influential climatic, topographic, and anthropogenic conditions.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus has caused a multistate outbreak among US dairy cattle, spreading across 16 states and infecting hundreds of herds since its onset. We rapidly developed and optimized PCR-based detection assays and sequencing protocols to support H5N1 molecular surveillance. Using 214 retail milk samples from 20 states for methods development, we found that H5N1 virus concentrations by digital PCR strongly correlated with quantitative PCR cycle threshold values; digital PCR exhibited greater sensitivity.

Zika virus, a mosquito-transmitted orthoflavivirus, has become a pathogen of global health concern ever since the virus caused an epidemic in Brazil in 2015 associated with approximately 700 000 laboratory-confirmed cases of congenital microcephaly. The subsequent spread of the epidemic in 2016 resulted in a wide spectrum of congenital neurological, ophthalmological, and developmental abnormalities across the Americas, Africa, and Asia. In this context, non-human primate models have become essential tools for Zika virus research to understand the pathogenesis of congenital brain injury and perinatal complications and for developing and testing medical countermeasures such as vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Enlargement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled brain ventricles (ventriculomegaly) is a defining feature of congenital hydrocephalus (CH) and an under-recognized concomitant of autism.
