Two convex polyhedra that markedly resemble the head of the flatback sea turtle hatchling are identified. The first example is a zygomorphic tetragonal dodecahedron, while the other, an even better matching structure, is a related tetradecahedron, herein speculated to arise from this particular dodecahedron via known mechanisms gleaned from studies of the behavior of foams. A segmented, biomorphic, convex polyhedral model to address cephalic topology is thus presented stemming from solid geometry, anatomical observations, and a recently computed densest local packing arrangement of fifteen slightly oblate spheroids in which fourteen oblate spheroids surround a central such spheroid.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) suppress the innate inflammation associated with kidney ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), but the mechanism is not well understood. Tregs express CD73, the final enzyme involved in the production of extracellular adenosine, and activation of the adenosine 2A receptor (A(2A)R) on immune cells suppresses inflammation and preserves kidney function after IRI. We hypothesized that Treg-generated adenosine is required to block innate immune responses in kidney IRI and that the Treg-generated adenosine would signal through A(2A)Rs on inflammatory cells and, in an autocrine manner, on Tregs themselves.

Background: Protecting the myocardium from ischemia-reperfusion injury has significant potential to reduce the complications of myocardial infarction and interventional revascularization procedures. Stilbazulenyl nitrone (STAZN), 8, a nitronyl-substituted hydrocarbon, is a novel second-generation azulenyl nitrone with significantly enhanced potency as a chain-breaking antioxidant vs conventional alpha-phenyl nitrones previously investigated as antioxidant therapeutics. A convenient (1)H NMR-based assay for assessing the potency of chain-breaking antioxidants has shown that STAZN is ca. 300 times more potent in inhibiting the free radical-mediated aerobic peroxidation of cumene than is PBN and the experimental stroke drug NXY-059.
