Asia-Pacific consensus for the management of osteoporosis in men.

Unlabelled: Osteoporosis in men is an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition that leads to significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in the aging population. This consensus report provides tailored guidelines for diagnosing, preventing, and treating male osteoporosis in the Asia-Pacific region by integrating global best practices with regional adaptations.

Purpose: To establish evidence-based, region-specific guidelines for the management of male osteoporosis in the Asia-Pacific region, addressing demographic and lifestyle factors.

Bone microstructure and TBS in diabetes: what have we learned? A narrative review.

Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of fracture. Areal bone mineral density (aBMD), the most reliable indicator of fracture risk in healthy adults, is low in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus but normal or high in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Most trabecular and cortical parameters measured by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) are lower in type 1 diabetes and higher in type 2 diabetes, in parallel with aBMD.

Antiresorptive Therapy to Reduce Fracture Risk and Effects on Dental Implant Outcomes in Patients With Osteoporosis: A Systematic Review and Osteonecrosis of the Jaw Taskforce Consensus Statement.

Objective: Placement of a dental implant in a patient on antiresorptive therapy has been hypothesized to increase the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and/or impact implant survival. In patients with osteoporosis, the risk of MRONJ with antiresorptive therapy is only marginally higher than observed in the general population.

Methods: The International ONJ Taskforce conducted a systematic review of the literature and evaluated the outcomes of implant placement in individuals with osteoporosis receiving antiresorptive therapy.

Bone Effects of Anti-Cancer Treatments in 2024.

Considerable progress has been made in the management of cancer patients in the last decade with the arrival of anti-cancer immunotherapies (immune checkpoint inhibitors) and targeted therapies. As a result, a broad spectrum of cancers, not just hormone-sensitive ones, have seen several patients achieve profound and prolonged remissions, or even cures. The management of medium- and long-term side-effects of treatment and quality of life of patients are essential considerations.

Bone turnover markers predict changes in bone mineral density in men treated with abaloparatide: results from the abaloparatide for the treatment of men with osteoporosis (ATOM) study.

Early increases in bone turnover markers (BTMs) in response to anabolic therapy correlate with 18-mo BMD increases in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis; however, this relationship has not been assessed in men. In this analysis, the correlation between changes from baseline in fasting intact serum procollagen type I N propeptide (PINP) and serum CTX at 1, 3, 6, and 12 mo and percent increase from baseline in BMD at 12 mo in men from the randomized phase 3 ATOM study (NCT03512262) were evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficients. The uncoupling index (UI), a measure of the balance between markers of bone formation (PINP) and bone resorption (CTX), with positive UI favoring bone formation, was calculated.
