Background: Suboptimal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) during pregnancy can have adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Aim: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant females in Lebanon and to identify its risk factors.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving pregnant females identified during their first-early second trimester visit to obstetricians in two centers in Beirut.
Unlabelled: In the largest meta-analysis of international cohorts to date, a family history of fracture is confirmed as a significant BMD-independent predictor of future fracture risk. Parental and sibling histories of fracture carry the same significance for future fracture, including the impact of family hip fracture on future hip fracture risk.
Purpose: We have undertaken a meta-analysis of international prospective cohorts to quantify the relationship between a family history of fracture and future fracture incidence.
Our ability to optimally manage bone health across the lifecourse, and so minimise the risk of fractures, has advanced substantially in recent decades. Whilst fractures and osteoporosis in older age were historically viewed simply as inherent in normal ageing, they are now recognised as manifestations of age-related disease. Key to advancing the field was the development of conceptual (relating to impaired bone mass and microarchitecture with increased propensity to fracture), and subsequent World Health Organization densitometric definitions of osteoporosis, cementing the role of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in bone health management.

Objective: To investigate whether neuropathic-like pain, identified using the PainDETECT questionnaire, predicts postoperative symptoms, using data from 2 independent, prospective cohort studies.
Patients And Methods: Data were collected from patients undergoing primary knee arthroplasty for primary osteoarthritis recruited to the Evaluation of perioperative Pain in Osteoarthritis of the kNEe (EPIONE) Study n=120, from October 1, 2011, to May 30, 2014, and the Clinical Outcomes in Arthroplasty Study (COASt) n=404, from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2018). The PainDETECT questionnaire score was used to divide patients into nociceptive (<13), unclear (13-18), and neuropathic pain (>18) groups preoperatively using validated cutoffs.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates bone homeostasis. Intermittent exposure to PTH results in bone formation being greater than bone resorption, and this effect has been harnessed through the development of agonists of the PTH and PTH-related protein type 1 receptor (PTH1R) to treat osteoporosis. Teriparatide, an analogue of the first 34 amino acids of PTH, and abaloparatide, which resembles PTH-related protein (PTHrP) in structure, are PTH1R agonists currently in clinical use.

The mothers' BMD did not differ between the two intervention groups.
Purpose: Vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy has positive effects on the offspring's bone development and bone mineral density (BMD) in childhood, but there are limited data on the effects on the mother's skeleton.
Objective: Placement of a dental implant in a patient on antiresorptive therapy has been hypothesized to increase the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and/or impact implant survival. In patients with osteoporosis, the risk of MRONJ with antiresorptive therapy is only marginally higher than observed in the general population.
Methods: The International ONJ Taskforce conducted a systematic review of the literature and evaluated the outcomes of implant placement in individuals with osteoporosis receiving antiresorptive therapy.
This study investigated associations between markers of inflammatory status and adiposity (interleukin-6 [IL-6], adiponectin and leptin) and measures of bone phenotype and fractures. The Medical Research Council (MRC) National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD) is a British birth cohort study. Participants (born during the same week in 1946) with complete data on DXA and pQCT parameters, markers of inflammatory status and adiposity, and potential confounders (498 men and 474 women) were included in cross-sectional analyses.

Objectives: Physical activity is important for health, but the influence of structured, supervised aerobic exercise sessions on habitual physical activity in healthy older adults is unclear.
Methods: We evaluated habitual physical activity in the Hertfordshire Physical Activity Trial, where healthy older adults were randomised to 36 supervised 1-hour gymnasium sessions on a cycle ergometer at moderate intensity over 12 weeks or to a control group with no intervention. We estimated physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and time spent in sedentary behaviour and light and moderate or vigorous physical activity over 7 days at three time points (before, during and immediately after the intervention) with individually calibrated combined heart rate and movement sensing.
Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are key diseases of musculoskeletal ageing and are increasing in prevalence and burden with the progressively ageing population worldwide. These conditions are thus particularly common in 'the oldest old', and there are complexities of managing them within the context of extensive multimorbidity, physical and mental disability, and polypharmacy, the rates for all of which are high in this population. In this narrative review, we explore the epidemiology of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in the oldest old before examining trials and real-world data relating to the pharmacological treatment of these diseases in older adults, including anti-resorptives and bone-forming agents in osteoporosis and symptomatic slow-acting drugs for osteoarthritis, paracetamol, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in osteoarthritis, recognising that the oldest old are usually excluded from clinical trials.

Purpose: Observational studies have suggested negative associations between maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) status and risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy [pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and preeclampsia (PET)]. Background: Findings from the Maternal Vitamin D Osteoporosis Study (MAVIDOS) trial demonstrated a positive effect of gestational cholecalciferol supplementation on offspring bone mineral density (BMD) at age 4 y. Demonstrating the persistence of this effect is important to understanding whether maternal vitamin D supplementation could be a useful public health strategy to improving bone health.
Objectives: We investigated whether gestational vitamin D supplementation increases offspring BMD at ages 6-7 y in an exploratory post-hoc analysis of an existing trial.
