Purpose: Laparoscopic total extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair is a well-established technique. In Taiwan, the National Health Insurance (NHI) covers the fees of the procedure and conventional mesh (polypropylene mesh), whereas the anatomical polyester mesh (Parietex™) requires additional self-pay. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of the conventional mesh with fixation versus the polyester mesh (without fixation) in laparoscopic TEP repair.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a leading neurodegenerative disorder, is closely associated with the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides in the brain. The enzyme β-secretase (BACE1), pivotal in Aβ production, represents a promising therapeutic target for AD. While bioactive peptides derived from food protein hydrolysates have neuroprotective properties, their inhibitory effects on BACE1 remain largely unexplored.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carcinogenic substances primarily formed through pyrolysis and oxidation of fat at high cooking temperatures, are commonly found at high levels in grilled meats. Reducing PAHs formation by incorporating natural antioxidants, such as through marination, has been demonstrated to be effective. However, the inhibitory effect of fresh phenolic-rich fruit powders on PAHs formation in charcoal-grilled meats remains unknown.

Emergency medical retrieval services (EMRS) in remote Indigenous islands is rarely investigated. We analyzed the characteristics of patients who underwent EMRS in Lanyu, an offshore island of Taiwan, from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2021. The need for EMRS for Lanyu Indigenous residents (N=132, 3.

Endometriosis is a complex gynecological disease that affects more than 10% of women in their reproductive years. While surgery can provide temporary relief from women's pain, symptoms often return in as many as 75% of cases within two years. Previous literature has contributed to theories about the development of endometriosis; however, the exact pathogenesis and etiology remain elusive.

Computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to model the velocity field and the transport of a passive scalar within a micro-scale chamber used to measure diffusional transport through various building materials. Comparisons of solutions obtained using a steady, laminar flow assumption with velocity measurements obtained from hot-wire anemometry show that the numerical method generally underpredicts the near surface velocity field. The results improve for higher flow rates and for carpeted test materials, modeled as a porous resistive layer.

This study aims to evaluate associations between the immunochromatographic rapid test technique and (TV) infection in patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) in Taiwan. All patients received post-prostate massage urine (VB3) Trichomonas rapid tests. The demographic characteristics and urogenital symptoms of CP/CPPS were recorded.

Introduction: Long-term kidney transplantation survival has been limited to cardiovascular-disease-associated death, which may be related to insulin resistance. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) and renal graft function.

Materials And Methods: From January 2013 to March 2015, 55 nondiabetic kidney recipients were reviewed retrospectively with their baseline fasting serum insulin and glucose levels as the basis the following indexes: 1.

D-501036 [2,5-bis(5-hydroxymethyl-2-selenienyl)-3-hydroxymethyl-N-methylpyrrole] is herein identified as a novel antineoplastic agent with a broad spectrum of antitumoral activity against several human cancer cells and an IC(50) value in the nanomolar range. The IC(50) values for D-501036 in the renal proximal tubule, normal bronchial epithelial, and fibroblast cells were >10 mumol/L. D-501036 exhibited no cross-resistance with vincristine- and paclitaxel-resistant cell lines, whereas a low level of resistance toward the etoposide-resistant KB variant was observed.

Objective: Leiomyoma and hyperprolactinaemia are both progesterone-dependent diseases. Hormone-related genes, such as the progesterone receptor (PGR), might be involved in their pathogenesis.

Design And Measurements: Subjects were divided into three groups: (i) leiomyoma (n = 120); (ii) hyperprolactinaemia (n = 101); (iii) normal controls (n = 140).
